Destiny Update

Destiny: The Taken King Requires 10-20GB of Extra Hard Drive Space Even if you Don’t Buy it

Destiny: The Taken King will launch on September 15th, but a major update will launch a week prior to that which will be required for all players. This update will contain a good portion of The Taken King, but also is necessary for those that haven’t bought the DLC expansion. This is because the main Destiny experience is being altered by changes in The Taken King, so even if you haven’t purchased the DLC, you still need the update.

The issue is that this update is pretty massive, so you’ll want to check your hard drive space before it launches on September 8th. Those on last gen versions of Destiny are particularly in danger, as they might not have enough space, causing problems with Destiny or other games.

Bungie has provided the required space for each system, as well as some tips for how to clear room. “For Xbox 360, you’ll need around 10GB free for the required update For PS3, you’ll need closer to 20GB free for the required update during installation, and then about 10GB free for the required update after installation.”

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 featured 20GB versions of their consoles at one time, apparently there is almost no way for these to handle the Destiny: The Taken King update. Bungie’s only solutions involve upgrading your hard drive, upgrading your console, or contacting them to verify that you are unable to. What exactly they will do after verifying it isn’t very clear.

Both PS4 and Xbox One will need to have 18GB of free hard drive space for the Destiny update. Luckily these consoles both launched with larger HDDs, so most should have the free space, or be able to get it. IF you do not have 18GB free then you’ll have to uninstall some games or apps, or upgrade your hard drive via various methods.

This update bumps up the overall hard drive space requirements for Destiny as follows: PS3 & Xbox 360 – 30GB, PS4 & Xbox One 60GB. Destiny: The Taken King hits all four systems on September 15th.
