Doom 3 BFG to be released later this year

by Ethan Powers on May 30, 2012

Bigger F—ing Guns!!!

It’s Doom, with even “BIGGER F—ING GUNS!!!” Not really, it’s actually a remastered version of Doom 3 and it’s expansion with even more goodies that we will get into in just a second. id Software has gone back and tweaked the graphics and controls of the game to allow for a more impressive and smoother playing experience. It also will be released, for the first time, on PS3 alongside its Xbox 360 and PC counterparts.

The official press release reads: “This genre defining game and its add-on pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. “Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, The Lost Mission featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats. id Software has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the Doom single and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and Doom 3 now features the new armour-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.”

So it’s an entire package featuring better controls, graphics, expansions AND new levels?!The game will also support 3D, 5.1 Surround Sound, Achievements/Trophies, improved lighting and rendering and a new auto-save system. John Carmack has also stated that he feels shooter fans everywhere will embrace the game as enthusiastically as they did the original with its “enhanced and extended” campaign and “silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls” across all platforms.

So it’s an entire package featuring better controls, graphics, expansions AND new levels that will offer “hours” of more gameplay?! If it runs at under $40 I’ll be slightly annoyed that I bothered to buy the original a while back. Nevertheless, the game sounds and looks like a real treat! Coming out on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later this year, will you get this behemoth? An even bigger question, is id releasing this to get people excited about Doom again ahead of a potential Doom 4 reveal later this year as well??? Certainly more likely than a new Half Life reveal from Valve (give me a break, I haven’t gotten to sneak that into an article in a long time).
