Happy Birthday Kinect, Microsoft Ships 10 Million

Microsoft's Kinect Motion Controller is getting ready to turn a year old.  The Kinect initiative has been a good venture for Microsoft, shipping 10 million units since launch, it's safe to say that the device has gotten off to a great start.

Though digging deeper into these massive sales numbers, the Kinect sold a record breaking 8 million units within the first 60 days of the device being on sale.  The massive hype that surrounded the controllerless environment had consumers chomping at the bit to get their hands on the new technology.  According to these recent numbers from the software giant, only two million further units have sold in the 10 months since.

The Kinect has no doubt been a game changer for the way people think about interacting with their computers.  However, it's applications in-game have been somewhat muted, with very little being added by developers for the core gaming experience over the past year.

It's hard to tell if developers that are making games for the core audience will adopt the technology on a widespread scale.  However, there are some titles on the horizon that plan to utilize the power of the controller.  Bioware has announced that the popular Mass Effect franchise will utilize the controller in Mass Effect 3, next year.  And Ubisoft is including some interesting gameplay twists in their popular Ghost Recon shooter franchise.

ok i think kinect was a fail but it was a good idea, if they release a new kinect with the new xbox and make its tracking capabilities twice as good i might get one.

I have 10 games that are good, but then again I play them the way kinect was meant to be played, with my kids, wife and friends. All who love it, so MS did something right. Haters are going to hate…..lag, lack of games, blah blah blah. But it does what it supposed to do entertain people. I’m happy I purchased it. Its nice getting my kids into games with having to worry about a controller or M rated shooters. But then again that’s not for everyone.

Have about 4 games myself too, I wouldn’t recommend kinect for everyone, but it did add some casual/party gaming I did not have before on my Xbox, so I’m happy with it.

Wow, an entire year and still got a laggy, unresponsive, misreading piece of $hit that did nothig but keep good games coming to Xbox all year.

And look! We are right back where we started November 2010, still laggy, no good games, what little involvement it does have in games is simply lame.
