Even though Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain just came out, Konami is apparently already planning for a new Metal Gear Solid video game.
Kotaku noted that Nikkei (a famous Japanese newspaper) reports that Konami is “mulling over plans for another title in the popular stealth series“. The newspaper mentions Hideo Kojima has not decided yet if he will return to be involved in the series going forward.
However, it’s unlikely Kojima will be involved in another Metal Gear Solid game ever again. He already stated numerous times that The Phantom Pain will be the last one he will make. Not to mention Konami unceremoniously got rod of Kojima by disbanding his studio, cancelling Silent Hills and more.
Konami said: “When we start development, a large-scale investment will become necessary“. This might be good news for Metal Gear Solid fans. This is small evidence that it will be a big budget game and not just a mobile title or a panchinko machine.
However, a Metal Gear Solid game without Kojima may upset some people. Hopefully the new game stays true to the franchise and it doesn’t ruin the spirit of the series. We’ll just have to wait and see if Konami makes an official announcement on the future of MGS.
