The Mass Effect games have been popular over the years, but they have never sold as many copies as other games in EA’s portfolio. The company expects that Mass Effect Andromeda will attract a larger audience than ever before.
Speaking at EA’s Investor day, CEO Andrew Wilson spoke about the prospects about Mass Effect Andromeda. In his mind, the game could go on to be the biggest one of the franchise so far.
He said: “And then we have Mass Effect: a whole new Mass Effect story emerging, a fan favorite. As a category role playing games or RPGs continues to grow and break beyond what was the core gamer audience. We’ve seen other games in the category do this, and we believe that Mass Effect will do that”
Role-playing games aren’t usually as accessible as sports and shooters, but there have been exceptions to this rule. Final Fantasy 7 managed to attract lots of fans back in 1997 and more recently Skyrim and Fallout 4 sold millions of copies in 2011 and 2015 respectively.
Mass Effect Andromeda somewhat has a cleaner schedule now that it’s coming out in early 2017 as opposed to Fall 2016. It might be easier to sell more copies without competing against the likes of the other games coming out before Christmas.
