Why the PlayStation 4 needs to be more like the PS2

by Jonathon Jones on February 15, 2013

ps4-like-ps2

The PlayStation 4 should be the next PlayStation 2. Confusing huh? But, if the PS4 follows in the footsteps of its immediate predecessor, the PS3, we may never see a fifth incarnation of Sony’s gaming consoles.

The Ps2 is like the Volkswagen Beetle of gaming consoles, and for as much as Sony tried to make the PS3 the same way, it just didn’t happen.  Go to any retail game shop for new and used games and the library of PS2 titles is far bigger than PS3.  Game development for PS2 continued even after the birth of its offspring, but now that the PS3 has been in prime longer than PS2, there still isn’t nearly the same number of games available. That’s because the PS2 was a truly dedicated gaming machine, and one of the last of its kind, from an era when Sony absolutely dominated the marketplace.

“The PS2 was a truly dedicated gaming machine, and one of the last of its kind..”

Let’s start with a developer and publisher as an example.  One of my favorites has always been Atlus.  They make some of the best JRPGs, and some of the shrewdest yet smartest choices in games to publish like Odin Sphere and Demon’s Souls.  Their PS2 titles included, and these are just the ones that I owned and played, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1&2, Persona 3&4.  Other Atlus/Megaten games include the Devil Summoner series.  Here’s a better list of Atlus developed and published games for the PS2.  Off the top of my head, the number of Atlus developed games for PS3 and the HD era come to a grand total of one.  And according to Wikipedia, that’s correct.  Catherine is the only Atlus developed and published game for HD consoles, and it was an extremely difficult puzzle game that received great reviews, but left me feeling disappointed.  I wanted Persona 5.  As for the number of Atlus games for DS, 3DS, PSP and Vita, it matches up pretty well with the total developed for PS2, and probably eclipses it, but not by much.

catherine-games-atlus-ps4-persona5

There could be many reasons why a developer like Atlus shied away from the HD generation.  They weren’t the only developer.  Sega’s PS3 exclusive, and truly amazing, Valkyria Chronicles had all of its sequels placed on handhelds.  Maybe it’s just really expensive and risky to develop HD games without expecting Call of Duty like sales targets.  Also, PS3 was supposedly famous for being difficult to develop for, though I have yet to read anything on why this was this case or hear anything from an actual game programmer on how this was true. I am sensing a bit of a pattern with the developers that jumped ship from, or never really got on board with HD?  Atlus, Sega….and other Japanese developers?  How can any console by Sony be a true success if its home nation practically abandons it?  Maybe I’m overestimating the relevance of Japanese games, and if I am, then PS4 doesn’t stand a chance with me.

“Consoles are for games, and without enough they won’t exceed or match the success of their progenitors”

Consoles are for games, and without enough they won’t exceed or match the success of their progenitors.  PS3 wasn’t exactly a failure, but the HD era hasn’t really applied to gaming as much as it has to film and television, and it shows in game development and 360 and PS3 usage.  I’m willing to bet that at this point that most people use their consoles for about 50% games and 50% TV and movies.  I do.  Torrents and TV programs work pretty well on my PS3, and I use it for Blu-ray discs from time to time and the NHL and MLB streaming networks.  But that’s not the norm for the Japanese.  Hulu and Netflix are still not readily available in Japan, either through consoles or any other way.  The Japanese PlayStation Network only recently went through the same update as the North American side, making it look something like the YouTube app for consoles.  Also, the Japanese PSN was down much longer after the credit card conundrum and hacking scandal.  There aren’t any movies available on the the Japanese PSN either, they don’t do online gaming or digital film and TV as much as the West.  Well, maybe online gaming, but certainly not digital movies.  They just want games.  And the PS3 didn’t give them enough of them.

“Gamers want games, plain and simple”

It doesn’t matter whether you live in Japan like me, the US, or any other region. Gamers want games, plain and simple. Here’s another recent article that basically echoes the view of any Japanese gamer.  I share this sentiment.  Even though my PS3 usage has been split between TV/movies and gaming, there’s still only one reason I bought it, for games.  There’s only one thing I’ll be paying attention to on Feb. 20, if that is indeed the time of the PS4 reveal.  Games.  I won’t be looking at the design or shape of the PS4, I just want to see the GAMES!  I won’t care too much about it’s color, it’s weight, it’s specs, it’s power or how it tastes, smells, and feels.  I will only be looking for the pics and footage of launch games and others to be announced alongside the PS4.  Oh, and the Last Guardian official release date for PS4 wouldn’t hurt either.  Team Ico, another Japanese developer that hardly made anything for the PS3!  Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, HD re-releases on PS3, and then nothing!

If you’re reading this Sony, consider this an SOS:

The PlayStation 4 needs games!
Cheers,
JJ in Sendai.  Quake free since last Tuesafsqrgay…..ohhh siht!

I agree with the PS2 being the last of it’s kind. The sixth generation as a whole is probably one of my favorites along with the fourth and fifth genarations. Gaming isn’t what it used to be, and Iwith Microsoft’s new approach to piracy and used games, Nintendo and Sony are all I have left to look forward to, and PC.

It’s funny how badly you want that no used games RUMOR to be true, Sony just shut down the same dog on rumor…. ignorance at it’s best, that comment wasn’t even necessary -_-

it’s funny how my comment bothers you so much, if your dumbass was paying attention to my last posts you would realize that I also don’t care for M$ because of them requiring players to have an online connection to function and how they are driving some consumers crazy with their pay to play and hardware unreliability, which is why I still rely on Sony and the others for their online.

You hear what you want to hear jackass I suggest you get your head out of your ass and understand what someone is saying instead jumping to conclusions. Typical that you would also thumb yourself up too.

What the hell are you a Xbox fanboy or something?

-_- nothing you say makes sense….It’s a rumor, treat is as such. At least Allen knew what he was talking about

          • Truth Be Told

It makes alot of sense as I explained very thoroghly to another user who like you tried to start a flame war, if you don’t understand thats your problem. I had nothing against you but when you start something expect a response.

          • strong

You went out of your way to insalt the Xbox for no reason…….with 2 rumors, I can make my point without cursing or making a fool out of my self -_-

          • Truth Be Told

You obviously did the same thing when you insulted me for stating my opinion. I have not had a flame war with anyone on this site in 2 years. If you read my past comments I didn’t always have a grudge against the Xbox, only in recent years I have over the number of things I’ve seen them pull and get away with. I loved the Gears and Halo franchise which right their proves that I have some joy over playing the Xbox I just will never play online again. I don’t even usually use profanity on this site and I apologize for its use but I gathered the impression that you were trying to make me sound as if I were biased which is not true because Sony like many others have their faults as well only difference is Sony seems to listen to the consumer.

For some reason gaming just isn’t as good as it used to be hey? What happened? Did we grow older? Did our hearts grow colder? :*(

      • http://twitter.com/jjindie72 Jonathon Jones

I grew up with Nintendo, but Nintendo did not grow up with me. I moved on to HD, but Japan did not move on with me.

Things are different. Games are just too, um……clean? They don’t have the secrets, the nook n’ crannies and often feel hollow. Also, no one tries anything new these days. I remember buying a game, and not know what to expect from it. Now, I feel like I know how to play most games before I even insert it into the console.

Hey everybody someone has started a project in kickstarter, they are making a book of the Dragonborn.
I wanna back the project but I need some opinions first!

    What do you guys think?

    • Salvatore G

      Sounds lame.

  • RoadShow

ROFLMFAO, okay PS2 wasn’t just a gaming machine, me and millions others sold it to our wives/girlfriends exactly like this. I know you remember hearing at least 1 person in the store saying this:

“But honey, the PS2 is a CD player, DVD player and it can play PS2 and PS1 games!” – It was such a deal they couldn’t say no.

With the PS2 though my wife still wanted to throw it out the window I played it so much. With the PS3 she admitted the other day that she fell in love with it. It literally is all I have plugged into my TV and all you really need. Blu ray, 3D Blu ray, upscale DVD to HD, CD, all the best apps, Internet browser, Pandora, Video games, it automatically connected to my PC and used it as my home media server & Online movie rental. Then once you put it on surround sound (very easy, just need a receiver/speakers) then you are all pimped out.

PS4 is welcome to become ever more of a nerve center, the only way I can think of that it can do this is to become a cable box or more likely a home media server it’self (although I think it’s a bit much, connecting to my PC is perfect since I dont’ use my Playstation hard drive and I got 2 TB out there and all my music/movies/pictures/videos are all on it already).

  • RoadShow

Great, another comment that didn’t post. Well this is getting really old.

  • Jason

I remember when i got a PS2, it was AMAZING and i got GT3 and Killzone as my first games, The graphics were way better than my N64 (loved that too) but after a few years I played Halo on an Xbox at a buddies house and it blew the PS2 away in raw power, It was a huge leap in Tech, not like PS3 being slightly better than Xbox 360 but it was like going from N64 to Dreamcast graphics. This gen just has not felt as special as the previous, I don’t know why, but Im hoping for that too change this fall! It’s not the Huge leap in Graphics, i dont know what it was, maybe me being younger?

    • Wanna_be_PS3_420

What? No freaking way. Now I know you never have PC gamed. Halo on PC was 100 times better than the orig. xbox counterpart and I recently played Halo on Xbox and was blown away about how horrible it looked. I don’t game xbox, Im’ Nintendo, Playstation and PC and Xbox has no business being in my house. I can play just about every game without it so why even think about it? Take a look at PC recommended specs for the supposed 360 exclusives and you will see that just about any clunk of junk…even your school computer can run these with just a cheap graphics card.

Orig. xbox was more powerful than PS2 but only barely. It doesn’t matter, just like how PS3 is more powerful than 360.

    ? you already said that

    • Truth Be Told

Yeah that was my first comment, but it didn’t show up so I posted the one all the way at the top second to this comment because I couldn’t find this one. I apologize I’ve been on edge lately. Tax time I always get anxious despite me doing them with HR Block. I also have some problems with my car with the axle joint which is going to probably hurt my pocket even more.

@ strong Yeah that was my first comment, but it didn’t show up so I posted the one all the way at the top second to this comment because I couldn’t find this one. I apologize I’ve been on edge lately. Tax time I always get anxious despite me doing them with HR Block. If you see this comment twice that is because it didn’t show up the first time. Roadshow is having the same problem I have with our comments.

Well either you’re posting with duplicate names from the same address, swearing, including a url, or doing something else to make it shoot your comment to spam.

      • Truth Be Told

No If you check my IP Address and other users as well they and I have different IP’s. I’ve been Truth B eTold for the past 2 years. It could be because of my swearing, but I also had trouble even when my content was swear free. I know others who had the same problem.

        • http://attackofthefanboy.com/ William

Others? Like Allen aka aka aka aka aka aka

          • Truth Be Told

Yeah, It could be the server and sometimes I check the newest comments and they still don’t show up leaving me to post comments more than once which I didn’t intend to do on purpose.

When I look at the page it tells me there’s a new reply. You could also register with disqus and get email alerts, or subscribe to the comments rss feed to see when new comments arrive. There are a lot of options in disqus that you could use to be updated when there are new comments.

          • Truth Be Told

Okay thanks, I’ll look into that.
