Nintendo’s Wii U has fallen behind even the lowly PS Vita in Japan. The Wii U sold a meager 9633 units in Japan according to Media Create data, who also report that the PS Vita sold 11,456. While it may have been expected that the PS Vita would see a small jump in sales due to a recent price cut by Sony on the handheld and some Japanese retailers slashing prices ahead of the scheduled price cut.
Analysts are expecting Vita sales to continue to pick up, driven by the catalyst of the price cut, and the interest that PS4 compatibility might bring to the new device. The Wii U on the other hand, has nothing propelling it higher for the forseeable future. The console is severely lacking a must have title to drive sales, and Japan is also feeling this drought.
Things should get better for the Wii U as the year wears on, games are announced at E3, and new titles are released for the console. By comparison, the PlayStation 3 doubled Wii U sales in the most recent week.
It’s not all bad for Nintendo though. Their 3DS handheld outsold everything by a landslide, moving nearly 75,000 handhelds in Japan.
