One Month with Microsoft’s Xbox One

Recommended Videos

So, the Xbox One has been out for a month now. I preordered mine, and it came on the day of release, November 22nd. This means that I’ve had just over a month to get to grips with the Xbox One, and this article is just a brief summary of my thoughts on the next gen gaming console.

It’s still too early to properly judge the Xbox One

Really, it was too soon to judge the Xbox One without having an extended period of time with it. Unfortunately I was often too busy to use mine during the first two weeks of release, so I thought waiting a month to post my impressions would make sense. My conclusion after just over a month of usage? It’s still too early to properly judge the Xbox One.

What makes me say that? Well, for starters; very few new IPs have been released so far. Big blockbusters like The Division, Watch Dogs and Titanfall haven’t hit the system yet, and these are what I expect will truly make the Xbox One shine. I bought and completely Ryse: Son of Rome which was a beautiful game, but seriously hindered by repetitive gameplay and a short campaign. Here is Attack of the Fanboy’s review of it if you want to know more.

Another reason why I think it’s too early to judge the Xbox One is because I haven’t really used Kinect yet. Except for Fighter Within, which has been largely slated by gamers, there aren’t any games that really utilize the Kinect 2.0 sensor. I’m looking forward to Kinect Sports Seasons, which was originally in my next-gen Day One lineup until it was delayed.

So what can I say about the Xbox One? Well, the majority of my experience with it has been on FIFA 14 and Call of Duty: Ghosts. Both of these games I had on Xbox 360 first, and the generation difference varied. FIFA 14 for Xbox One was rebuilt using the new Ignite engine from EA Sports, and it shows. It outperforms earlier versions vastly, as I’ve said previously. Ghosts on the other hand… I didn’t notice that much difference. It was definitely better, but I would’ve said the margins were slim.

Overall I’m happy I bought the Xbox One, but it hasn’t been the stellar be-all-and-end-all that I was expecting. I’ve chalked that up to developers not making full use of the new technology, and the best games are yet to come.

But do you share my opinion? Leave your impressions of the Xbox One, or even the PS4 in the comments below.
