The 5th Wave is out in cinemas today in North America and there is a lot to talk about in terms of the story and who “The Others” are. The ending also leaves things open for things to be further explained. This is our spoiler talk for the movie.

It goes without saying that this article will talk about spoilers about The 5th Wave. Click away if you have not seen the movie or read the book. If you are still here, let’s discuss all of the major plot points of the film. Bear in mind I’ve only seen the film so will discuss movie spoilers.

Let’s get the obvious spoiler out of the way first and say that Colonel Vosch (Liev Schreiber) is the big bad guy alien of the film. At the start of the film, he’s shown to be an army hero. However it turns out that the whole American army are aliens. They manage to disguise themselves as “humans”.

“The Others” have a plan to wipe out humans from Earth using five waves. The first few waves are by using natural forces like tsunamis, diseases, and wiping out electricity. The 5th Wave is the most interesting one.

The 5th Wave is when the aliens manipulate gullible kids into joining the army. They use faux goggles to “detect” alien beings. However, it’s a trick in order for the kids to kill off other human beings. The 5th Wave so to speak is getting young kids to do the aliens’ dirty work for them.

Ben Parish/Zombie (Nick Robertson) is a part of Squad 53. Squad 53 also includes Cassie Sullivan’s (Chloe Grace Moretz) brother named Oscar Sullivan. Thanks to Squad 53’s Ringer, she and Zombie find out that they are being used by Colonel Vosch and the army to kill off the remaining human survivors. They form a plan to escape with with Oscar as he was left in the base.

Cassie on the other hand was lucky early on not to be recruited by Colonel Vosch. She missed the bus rise to the army base. To cut a long story short, she has to survive on her own until she stumbles into Evan Walker (Alex Roe) who saves her from a sniper gun wound.

Evan Walker however reveals to Cassie that he’s not entirely human. He’s an alien too known as a Silencer. He’s been living on Earth for many years. However, he gains human emotions and falls in love with Cassie as he admires he toughness and strength. We could say that he a “traitor” like Finn in Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens.

The ending of the film is where people may not understand that it’s not supposed to finish in one movie. Evan Walker uses his alien powers to blow up Colonel Vosch’s army base. Cassie infiltrated the base earlier and manages to meet up with Ben as they save Oscar. However, Vosch is still alive as he escapes the base on a helicopter. The 5th Wave film ends when Cassie hangs out in a camp fire with the rest of Squad 53.

As I already stated in my review, The 5th Wave leaves some unanswered questions wide open and this is done on purpose because the book is a trilogy. Cassie and the others still have to save the other kids that Vosch has brainwashed and they also have to kill Vosch himself as he escaped.

If this movie gets a sequel, it should also delve more into Evan Walker as well. He just buggered off at the end after blowing up the base. It seemed weird that he didn’t join up with Cassie after falling in love with her.

Unlike most critics, I enjoyed  The 5th Wave for what it was worth. Sure the ending may not be conclusive, but this was done on purpose to set up for hopefully two more movies. The other two movies should explain some of the other missing details. We just have to wait for the Box Office results to know if another sequels get greenlit.
