When The Culling 2 released last week, it was not well received.  It put the developer, Xaviant, in a difficult situation where they were losing players in droves and the game was basically D.O.A.  Today, Josh Van Veld of Xaviant took to YouTube to outline the developer’s plans for The Culling 2 and the original game.

This is not a game that you asked for

The Culling 2 is being pulled from the Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation stores and players who purchased the game will be getting refunds, according to Van Veld.  “The Culling 2 was not a game that you asked for and not the game that you expect as a worthy succesor to The Culling,” says Van Veld in the video to fans.

Van Veld explains that the road forward for The Culling franchise is going back to basics for the developer.  Putting The Culling 2 out to pasture, the developer will focus all of its efforts on the original game.  They will be going back to The Culling “Day One,” according to the developer.  “We realize that we changed too much, too fast and that there was something very unique and very special about the personality of that game that we were too eager to modify, to balance, to retune — so we took a game that you guys loved and we changed it out from under you.”

The build of The Culling that the developer launched in Spring 2016, the day one early access version of the game which basically put it on the map will be available on Test Servers for PC players.  Xaviant will resume active development on The Culling going forward, looking to build onto that day one form.  Van Veld also announces that The Culling is going free to play going forward once the upcoming update is pushed to the game.

Will these moves pull The Culling series out of the death spiral that it’s currently in?  Van Veld is absolutely right that The Culling offered something unique in its 2016 early access version.  It was way ahead of the curve when it launched and offered a satisfying take on Battle Royale in a gaming landscape that had neither PUBG or Fortnite: Battle Royale.

When Major Nelson updated fans and followers regarding Microsoft’s plans for Gamescom 2018 earlier today, they did so in a way that led many to believe that the company would be revealing new Xbox hardware at the German tradeshow.

While gaming fans started thinking about the possibilities that Gamescom 2018 could hold with Microsoft announcing new hardware, it turns out that we shouldn’t be expecting earth shattering announcements at the show.

Instead of “all-new Xbox hardware,” per the original wording in the post, it looks like Microsoft will be announcing new “Xbox One bundles” and accessories at the show instead.  This isn’t exactly a huge shock.  It would be more shocking that Microsoft choose Gamescom to announce any new Xbox One hardware with E3 just a month in the rear view.

Still, Gamescom could have something for Xbox fans to be excited for.  There’s been some speculation for a while that Microsoft is readying a successor to their popular Elite Controller which is said to feature a bunch of new functionality.

Xbox fans will still want to tune in for the Inside Xbox Show on August 21st to hear about these new bundles and accessories.

UPDATE (7/18)

Curb your excitement, folks.

In an update, Microsoft clarified its previous statement about “all-new Xbox hardware,” saying that it will just be announcing new “Xbox One bundles” and accessories at the show instead.

It’s not quite what fans had in mind, but Gamescom could still have something to look forward to.

ORIGINAL STORY

If you thought that the most you would be getting from Microsoft before the next-gen Xbox arrives were the Xbox One X and Xbox Adaptive Controller, then you’d be wrong. In fact, according to an announcement, the company has been working on a few “all-new Xbox hardware and accessories” and is set to show them off at Gamescom next month.

The announcement states fans can expect to see details about the upcoming tech, as well as features on upcoming titles and a “few surprises,” during the Inside Xbox show, which is set to broadcast live from its booth at Gamescom on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 4:30 p.m. CEST (7:30 a.m. PDT/10:30 a.m. EDT) on xbox.comMixerTwitchYouTubeFacebook and Twitter.

So, what can these Xbox hardware and accessories possibly be? For now, it’s safe to assume that it won’t be the next-generation consoles that Microsoft teased at E3 2018 (too early), nor will it be the Xbox Adaptive Controller announced back in May (as you can see, we already know about it). Instead, it’s likely we’ll be hearing something about a special variant of the Xbox One S or X, as well as the next version of Microsoft’s Xbox Elite controller.

The Xbox Elite controller is especially interesting because while we figured another one would inevitably show up since the original is nearly three years old now, photos of a rumored successor emerged back in January, giving further reason to believe that one was due out in the near future. Among other features, this upgraded controller is rumored to sport a USB-C port for charging, Bluetooth support for Windows 10 and three-level hair-trigger locks.

Regardless of what Microsoft plans to show us, at least we know we won’t have to wait too long to hear it.

Gamescom will run from Aug. 21 to Aug. 25.

Today (July 18), Telltale unveiled a new teaser trailer for the upcoming The Walking Dead: The Final Season. This short teaser is filled with information we already know; Clementine is taking care of AJ, they come across other survivor kids at a post-apocalypse boarding school, etc. There was one image in particular, however, that has gotten the fanbase talking.

At about 35 seconds into the video, there is a close-up of a man smoking a cigar. This character is notable as the first adult character we’ve seen so far in the game, with the rest of the announced cast comprised of children and teenagers. But this quick shot of an adult may be more than just the brief introduction of a new character. Fans on both Reddit and Telltale’s own Community page have pointed out the visual similarities between this unnamed character and a previous The Walking Dead character, Nate. Nate was a somewhat nihilistic survivor who first appeared in the first season’s “400 Days” DLC and hasn’t made an appearance in the series since. Nate and this potentially new adult character don’t look exactly the same, but it’s worth keeping in mind that many character models, as well as graphics and engines in general, have changed between the first season and The Final Season, and that several years in the world of the game have passed since Nate’s last appearance.

It has also been pointed out that while (SPOILERS) Clem and Kenny meeting up in Season Two and Javier and David meeting up in A New Frontier were kind of far-fetched plot devices, given how unlikely those scenarios would be in a world such as The Walking Dead‘s, Clem meeting up with Nate wouldn’t seem far-fetched since the two have never met before, making their potential meeting less contrived than the possibilities of Clem meeting up with other previous characters who she has interacted with, such as Christa or Lilly. Telltale has yet to confirm the reappearances of any previous characters from the series (with the obvious exceptions of Clem and AJ), but they’ve also been sure to not publicly rule out the possibility either. However, at the moment this rumor is purely fan speculation, so fans of Nate might not want to get their hopes up until an official announcement is made one way or the other.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season‘s first episode is set to release on August 14 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. The game will also come to the Nintendo Switch later this year. You can watch the new teaser below.

The Walking Dead franchise is growing once again with the previously announced VR title finally getting some key details revealed. Titled The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, the new game from Skydance Interactive in collaboration with Skybound Entertainment will take players to some very new places for the series. This includes VR, a first for the franchise as a whole, as well as the new setting of New Orleans.

“Set in the flooded remains of New Orleans, the game will challenge players to make their way through the iconic quarters, as they explore what has become a brutal, unforgiving wasteland,” reads the announcement. “Players will have to deal with others struggling to survive in what remains of this once vibrant city. In the world of The Walking Dead, the walkers are the least of your problems. Will you choose the path of a saint, or that of a sinner? You have watched and played in the world of The Walking Dead, now, get ready to Live it. ”

Saints & Sinners will be at San Diego Comic Con, so fans can check out all the activities there to get a better idea of what the game will entail. Art from the game will be displayed at Harbor House Restaurant from July 18 to July 21 for all to enjoy.

Santa Monica Studios is looking for some new talent, and if the description is anything to go by, then that talent will be applied to the making of the next God of War title.

Specifically, the job opening on Santa Monica Studios’ website is looking for a Character Concept Artist, with a listing that begins by stating:

Come award-winning God of War development team! Santa Monica Studio is looking for an experienced Senior Character Concept artist to help develop genre defining visuals delivered only on PlayStation. Come help us design a rich cast of characters and creatures steeped in story, mythology, mixed with strong historical detail and influences.

From there, it lists various requirements and skills such as the understanding of “the fundamentals of character design and demonstrate a strong sense of anatomy (human and animal), silhouette, costume design, and visual story telling,” as well as the capability to work “in an established art style.”

Though Sony has yet to make any official announcement concerning a theoretical God of War 2, it’s hard to look at this listing and not conclude that this is the game it is working on. It outright states God of War and goes on to mention “story, mythology with strong historical detail and influences” — something the franchise is known for. Furthermore, GoW has been doing exceedingly well since it released in April, so Santa Monica Studios would be fools not to try and make another one.

With all things considered, the real question here is which platform the God of War will debut on. Rumors suggest that the PlayStation 4 is nearing the end of its lifetime, so considering the magnitude of projects like this, it’s highly likely this will be yet another game that is set to arrive on Sony’s next-gen console.

All in all, this is pretty exciting news for those who enjoyed the new God of War, so hopefully Sony has more to share in a year or two.

Taiko no Tatsujin — also known as Taiko: Drum Master — has been largely absent in the West since the original console version arrived on the PlayStation 2 in 2004, but it looks like things could be changing soon as Bandai Namco has recently filed three trademarks related to the series in Europe, suggesting a Western release is on the way.

Here are the three trademarks in question:

There isn’t much to be said about the first trademark, but the other two are more notable since they allude to more recent entries in the series. Specifically, Drum Session! is the subtitle for Taiko Drum Master: Drum Session! which arrived on the PlayStation 4 in Oct. 2017, while Drum ‘n’ Fun is likely the English subtitle for the upcoming Taiko Drum Master: Nintendo Switch Version which is due to arrive in Japan on July 19 and recently trademarked on the Australian Classification Board earlier this month.

To be clear, Taiko no Tatsujin titles has been available in English in other instances outside the first, but those weren’t official English releases. Rather, they were SEA (Southeast Asia) releases with English subtitles or fan-made patches, meaning players would need to import them or download them, respectively.

Thankfully, the release of a legitimate English version would allow players to circumvent that hassle, allowing them to get the game with minimal effort. That said, there is one important thing players might want to keep an eye out for in the future: the song list.

The available songs in Taiko no Tatsujin usually change depending on the region and version, and its likely the same would occur with the English version. And since Bandai Namco has yet to officially announce anything, you might want to hold off on importing Taiko Drum Master: Nintendo Switch Version until more information is available.

Outside of that caveat, this is definitely an exciting moment for fans who’ve been waiting for Taiko no Tatsujin to properly return to the West. Let’s just hope we get the peripherals when it does.

Call-of-Duty-Black-Ops-4-Zombies-Chaos-Story

The Call of Duty series’ Zombies mode has been a fan-favorite for almost as long as it’s existed. Part of that popularity is due to Call of Duty’s solid shooting mechanics,  but it’s also safe to say that its fun and campy stories are just as responsible. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies will be continuing series tradition with a story of its own; details of which have finally been revealed in a brand new story trailer.

This time around, the story will be following the exploits of Scarlett Rhodes and her companions as they work to solve the mystery behind her father’s disappearance. Based on what’s seen here, the story appears to begin on the Titanic, but it doesn’t stay there. The intrepid adventurers soon find themselves on a journey through time, the outcome of which will apparently determine the fate of the world.

It also seems players will have quite a variety of weapons at their disposal this time around too. There are the standard weapons seen in most of the previous games: shotguns, assault rifles, pistols, knives, etc. but there appear to be several exotic weapons to choose from as well. In particular, the trailer shows-off some sort of beam weapon, an enchanted shotgun, a snake blade, some sort of magic grenade, a staff that creates a safe zone, a magic hammer, and a magic chakram among a few others. A couple of new enemies show-up as well, including a lanky behemoth type of zombie and a zombie tiger.

It appears Treyarch is aiming to make Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies the mode’s biggest and most bombastic iteration yet, while still retaining the mode’s campy tone. This is a good thing since Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 does not have a single-player campaign this time around and is changing the Call of Duty formula up in several other areas. Keeping Zombies mode close to its roots should help make the other changes more palatable.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases on October 12 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Now we know exactly when this new DLC is coming.

Ubisoft recently announced via press release that South Park: The Fractured But Whole‘s “Bring the Crunch” DLC will become available later this month, on July 31. In this new DLC, players will have to save the Lake Tardicaca summer camp once the camp’s counselors go missing. The player character will be teaming up with FastPass, Doctor Timothy, Professor Chaos and Mint-Berry Crunch to save the camp. The DLC will also see the inclusion of the new “Final Girl” superhero class, which “brings new combat tactics and traps to take down spooky enemies.” This new class, as well as the powers that come with it, will become available to the player in the game’s main campaign once the DLC’s story is finished.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. The “Bring the Crunch” DLC will be available for all consoles and is included in the game’s season pass and Gold Edition and will cost $11.99 as a stand-alone purchase.

no-mans-sky-next-update

When No Man’s Sky released on the PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016, it’s safe to say that it did not live up to the hype.  The gaming community at large had set such a lofty bar for the game to clear that it had no problem not reaching it.  Hello Games didn’t help much in the process.  They fed into the hype machine and many say that their marketing leading up to the release of the game was misleading.

Now, two years later, Hello Games has a massive update on the way for No Man’s Sky.  They’re calling it No Man’s Sky Next, and it’s a free update that will add full multiplayer support and base building, as well as a visual update, and more according to Sean Murray.

In many ways, what Murray is pitching here is what many wanted No Man’s Sky to be two years ago.  The July 24th Next Update will add things to No Man’s Sky that will increase the scope of the game.

Multiplayer and expanded base building will be introduced in the Next Update.  Players will be able to explore with friends or random online players, they can choose to play together and help each other survive as a friendly group or prey on others to do so.  Base building will be allowed anywhere on any planet, and the complexity of the bases will be increased with hundreds of new base parts.  Players will also be able to assemble and upgrade a fleet of ships, and there will be multiplayer missions which you can take on while at the helm of your freighter ship.  This is just a bit of what’ll be included in the Next Update, but the highlights for sure.

Hello Games has seemingly gone down the list of wrongs to right with No Man’s Sky Next and we won’t need to wait much longer to see if they were successful in their efforts.  For those who already own No Man’s Sky, the Next Update will be free to download on July 24th.  To those that didn’t buy into the hype, the game still costs $59.99 on the PlayStation Store and Steam.  Along with the update, the game will be arriving on the Xbox One.

The Japanese gaming company Sega has finally revealed to the gaming world the latest details of the upcoming Yakuza 3 PS4 remaster. The newly released screenshots feature two brand new ladies of the Hostess Clubs, JAV actresses Kana Momonogi and Yui Hatano. The two will make a big appearance in the PS4 remaster version of the game.

As mentioned earlier, there will be three clubs in the remaster version. These will be Flores in Okinawa, Jewel in Kamurocho, and SHINE. Yakuza players will select a girl in the said clubs, order some drinks and foods, make some nice conversation and finally, receive mail messages from the girl after leaving the place.

The game, which sometimes referred to as the GTA set in Japan, offers the latest drama of the Japanese criminal underworld, the infamous Yakuza. The game primarily takes place in Kamurocho, a fictional version of Tokyo’s Kabukicho red light district.

This is not the first time Sega has shared new details about their upcoming game. The company has already released the first trailer and direct feed screenshots of the upcoming PS4 remaster last May. That trailer provides users a glimpse of the improvements made, which will make Yakuza 3 shine much brighter on PS4 console.

Developed and published by Sega, Yakuza 3 is a single player, action –adventure game. It is the third installment in the iconic Yakuza game series. The game was first released for the PlayStation 3 gaming console in 2009. Yakuza’s main story divided into 103 unique side stories, which called sub-scenarios. These side stories or sub-scenarios are divided into two types, the first one is the Mission and the other one is the Hitman.

The upcoming Yakuza 3 PS4 remaster version will be released in Japan on August 8. Sega has not made any statement about its plans for US and international release.

ArcTheLad

Sony has announced that it’s mobile arm, ForwardWorks, will reveal the previously-teased new Arc the Lad game for mobile devices on July 30.

For those out of the loop, Arc the Lad is an old JRPG series that debuted on the original PlayStation back in 1995. Since then, it went on to add four more entries in the franchise before the whole thing ended with Arc the Lad: End of Darkness on the PS2 in 2005.

As for the mobile game specifically, it is the second of a pair of JRPGs (the first being Wild Arms: Million Memories) that Sony confirmed would be seeing a future revival back in 2016. Naturally, this can only be seen as disheartening to the many who have seen many a beloved RPG become a mobile game over the years (Breathe of Fire, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, etc.), but there is a bright side to all this: the staff.

Just like with Wild Arms, many of the staff from the original Arc the Lad and its sequel will be making a return to work on the mobile game, include:

  • Planning / Drafting / Game Design: Toshiro Tsuchida
  • Scenario: Norihiko Yonesaka
  • Art Drafting and Supervision: Eiji Koyama, Ryuichi Kunisue, Hiroshi Hayashi
  • Sound: T-Square’s Masahiro Andoh

Unfortunately, that’s all we know about the return of the “RPG of light and sound,” as everything else about it still under wraps. Hopefully we’ll get something of substance come July 30.

Check out the new teaser site here and the official Twitter account here.

Today, Guerrilla Games added Giles Armstrong to their writing staff. Armstrong has been in the games development business for quite awhile now, taking on several different roles during his time. He’s served as a QA tester, a Narrative Designer, and a Senior Game Designer on various projects. Armstrong is best known as a writer though, and he’s lent his pen to many an independent game. Most know him for his work with Eidos Montreal on titles such as Thief and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Now that he’s joined the ranks of Guerrilla Games, it’s likely that gamers will soon know him for his contributions to Guerrilla Games’ next big project.

Guerrilla Games has yet to announce their next project of course, but current speculation among gamers holds that it’s going to be the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. The game launched to rousing success shortly after it launched in February 2017, surprising just about everyone (including Guerrilla Games). So, it wouldn’t be too unreasonable to surmise that they’re already working on its sequel, especially since Guerrilla Games appears to be very open to the idea of continuing Aloy’s story. Following up a massively successful game is always tough, perhaps that’s one of the reasons why Guerrilla Games decided to hire Armstrong. Game development being what it is though, it’s just as likely that the developer has something else up their sleeve besides Horizon Zero Dawn 2. Either way, adding Armstrong to their writing team seems like a smart move on their part.

Sonic Mania was an awesome game, make even better with the recent Sonic Mania Plus release across multiple platforms. The game hearkens back to classic gaming in almost every way, from its 2D, pixel-art visuals to its easy to pickup gameplay. Its price is also smaller, coming in at $29.99 rather than the standard $59.99 price level of huge AAA releases. All of this and more are the focus of a new video released on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube page, bringing back classic TV ad mechanics while poking fun at more modern games.

You can check the video out below. It makes fun of AAA games in a ton of different ways, including a focus on shooter and the inevitable loot boxes that are gaming’s hot topic at the moment. It’s pretty clear what Sega is going for here, with the old school styled huckster pitching the game to you by naming all its bells and whistles. It brings back memories of Sega’s old ads that trashed Mario and Nintendo, as the two companies were bitter rivals back in the 90’s.

Sonic Mania Plus has capitalized on this retro styling in almost every way, and it’s paid off handsomely. The game has been a huge success for Sega, both critically and financially. The game brings Sonic back to his roots while updating and enhancing things across the board.

Last week, Castle and Firefly actor Nathan Fillion started making some posts on his Twitter and Instagram accounts teasing some sort of Uncharted-related announcement. Many fans got their hopes up, assuming that the teases meant that Fillion would be somehow involved in the Uncharted movie that’s being made. While that turned out to not be the case, what Fillion’s teases amounted to ended up being the next best thing.

Today (July 16), a live-action Uncharted fan film was uploaded to YouTube with Fillion playing series protagonist Nathan Drake. The film is professionally made by director Allan Ungar and faithfully represents what feels like could be a cutscene from an Uncharted game, featuring takes on both the series’s humor and action sequences; there is even a section that takes on a third-person action-adventure game camera perspective. As the film’s very nature as a fan film implies, it is not in any way affiliated with Naughty Dog itself. However, the film has seemed to garner some level of approval, as Nathan Fillion’s Tweet about the film was Retweeted by Amy Hennig, the director of the first three Uncharted games. You can watch the full fan film below, after which you may find yourself joining the ranks of fans clamoring for a full, 2-hour film expanding on the premise laid out in this 14-minute short.

Pokemon-GO-Fest-2018

I’ve spent the last two years of my life playing and complaining about Pokemon GO. The smash hit mobile game became a cultural phenomenon in 2016, but just a few weeks later the game was the focus of many people’s criticisms at wasting a huge opportunity. While I still agree that the game has struggled to live up to its massive potential, the last few months have been some of the best it has ever seen. Improvements have poured in with each update, and this last weekend’s Pokemon GO Fest was the ultimate example of just how well Niantic has turned things around.

If you need any evidence for just how well Pokemon GO Fest 2018 went, just look at the lack of articles talking about how big of a disaster it was. This was not the case last year, when phone service outages prompted a complete change of plans and eventual refunds to attendees. But of course, Pokemon GO Fest is a localized event, with thousands of attendees, not the millions that still play the game every day. So what was the experience like for them over the weekend and beyond? Pretty great, actually.

All these things keep the game fresh, and Niantic has kept a steady supply of events flowing

Events have sort of become PoGo’s bread and butter at this point, with time in between them being eclipsed by how often spawns and other mechanics are altered for player enjoyment. Double XP events, special eggs, special spawns, etc. All these things keep the game fresh and interesting, and Niantic has kept a steady supply of events flowing. Sometimes this gets exhausting, and player fatigue is a real issue, but what we have now is way better than what was going on before, with die hard players taking breaks since they’d filled their Pokedex and nothing interesting was going on.

With Gens 1, 2, and 3 already available and Gen 4 likely on the way, players probably won’t have a full Pokedex for some time. This is especially true with Legendary Pokemon available exclusively through raids and a few other methods. Raids have also become a major part of the Pokemon GO experience, and new ones pop up all the time. Sometimes this is bad, like with the current month long Regice raids, which players mostly just need for the Pokedex entry and nothing else, but that also gives many a break, and Niantic has inserted both Articuno and Lugia raids into the month to help keep interest.

Now, that’s not to say Niantic is batting a thousand with Pokemon GO. There are still issues and they are contributing to some of them. For example, the focus on Raids has also led to a focus on communication, yet there is still no way to do that within the app itself. Players turned to Discord and Facebook, but even with this it is tough to get everyone coordinated to attack the gym at the same time.

Meanwhile, Niantic once again shut down scanners which were mostly being used to help coordinate Raids. Players had set up systems that automatically notified players of nearby Raids, but those are all shut down now and Niantic has yet to offer an alternative. As it stands, players have to remain ever-vigilant, watching for new and interesting Raids and spawns, then use third party apps to tell others about them. It’s an inelegant solution to a problem that is well within Niantic’s ability and responsibility to solve.

Of course, this was all said about trading and friends and both of those features were added recently. Perhaps Niantic is cooking something up behind the scenes to fix these last few major problems with the Pokemon GO experience. Hopefully, because I’ve really enjoyed the last few months with the game, especially since I haven’t had to write any articles lambasting it and Niantic. I very much hope the streak continues and Pokemon GO gets to a point where I can finally say that it reached  or exceeded its original potential.

Splatoon-2-min

Earlier this a week, a Splatoon 2 player made headlines after he hacked the ranked leaderboards in order to send a message about cheating, and in an unsurprising move by Nintendo, it banned the user for doing so.

It all started early in the week when a user who has since identified themself as u/PleaseAddAntiCheat on Reddit, claimed responsibility for using four alternate accounts to hack and claim the top spot on every ranked mode. When read together, the names of the accounts spelled a message: “Please Add Anti Cheat.”

This, of course, was a response to the hacking problem that Splatoon 2 has suffered since it debuted last July. It’s all the typical stuff one would expect from a multiplayer shooter, such as unlimited ink (or ammo in this case), super-powered weapons and invisibility. It’s not like Nintendo isn’t aware of these issues and it even recruits players to to report anyone manipulating the game through Splatoon 2’s SplatNet app, but there’s just one problem: some of these issues just can’t be reported.

Even the recent patch did little to combat these lingering issues, with it focusing mostly on the usual weapon adjustments, bug fixes and the like. In fact, the patch notes make no mention of the multitude of exploits in any capacity.

With the situation being the way it is, it’s no wonder that an intrepid user determined that the only way to get Nintendo to take the hacking problem seriously was to hack the game themself; and for what it’s worth, it worked. Nintendo took notice and not only set each account’s rank to zero, but even went so far as to ban many of his accounts indefinitely.

“Looks like it took them a while to get to all of my accounts,” PleaseAddAntiCheat said in an update. “But can confirm my console is now 2124-4027.” (This number is displayed on Nintendo Switch consoles that have seen services restricted.)

That said, it’s still hard to say whether Nintendo learned anything from this. Why? Because Nintendo only went so far as to ban the temporary accounts and not the user’s main one nor the console itself. In other words, this user would be free to hack again if s/he wanted to, and if that’s the case, then someone with malicious intent to do the same.

So, yeah, Nintendo noticed, but it didn’t really do anything of note…at least it tried, I suppose?

Star-Citizen-source-refunds

Backers of the infamous Star Citizen project no longer have any means of demanding refunds from its developer, Cloud Imperium Games (hereon referred to as “CIG”). Considering the project’s current reputation, this probably won’t come as much of a shock to the wider gaming audience. However, it really shouldn’t surprise anyone since the writing’s been on the wall for quite some time now.

Normal means of pursuing refunds were effectively removed with Star Citizen’s June 6, 2016 terms of service update, but it wasn’t until December 2017 that CIG ceased issuing them entirely. Since then, the developer has just been sitting on refund demands. One backer, a reddit user going by the handle “Firefly212,” decided that they weren’t going to take such treatment sitting down. They sued CIG in US small claims court, filing their claim in early June. The court date was set for July 13, and the results came back the same day.

According to Firefly212 in a reddit thread entitled “I lost in court,” the judge declined to hear anything regarding the TOS’ “conscionability or lack of consideration.” As for CIG, who sent a representative of their interests, they were able to successfully argue that the arbitration clause present in the current TOS should be applied to transactions that occurred before it existed, despite the very first sentence of the Star Citizen TOS stating otherwise.

“These Terms of Service (TOS) do not affect any transactions made before its effective date. All prior transactions are governed by the TOS in effect on the date of such transactions .”

This in effect means that Firefly212 lost their case. It was dismissed by the judge and sent to arbitration as demanded by the current version of the Star Citizen TOS. Considering that the current TOS effectively removes all rights to refunds it’s probably safe to say that Firefly212 won’t be getting their money back. It doesn’t end here though. To find out what exactly this turn of events means for CIG and Star Citizen’s backers, we now turn to a man by the name of Derek Smart.

Smart is an independent game developer who’s been following CIG’s antics very closely over the past few years. Through his personal website, he’s been maintaining a forum which, among other things, has meticulously documented and laid-out plainly all the changes Star Citizen’s TOS has undergone since 2015. As shown in the thread dedicated to it, CIG has removed almost all backer’s rights through their revisions to the TOS. This includes CIG’s obligation to be financially accountable to their backers, something that they explicitly promised during the project’s initial drive for funding. They apparently don’t really have to deliver a final product either. The list goes on, but for now we must return to the topic of refunds.

On Twitter, Smart weighed in on the outcome of Firefly212’s case:

As Smart states above, a precedent has been set now that this has happened. Backers who want to try and force the issue and sue CIG now have next to no chance of getting anywhere in small claims court. One is tempted to say that they could just band together and pursue a class-action lawsuit, but, that route has already been closed-off by the Star Citizen TOS.

Very recent backers still have the possibility of requesting a refund, but it must be processed within fourteen days of their pledge. Given that CIG has previously seen fit to simply not respond to refund requests, those thinking about contributing to the project would do well to think twice before doing so. Because now, once one has pledged money to Star Citizen, there is absolutely no going back. Cloud Imperium Games have made sure of it.

Shenmue-dobuita-street

In anticipation of Shenmue I & II’s release in August, Sega brought two fans to Dobuita Street, one of the real locations recreated in the original game. The fans, Adam Koralik and Imran Yusuf, guide viewers through the notable spots in the area that Shenmue fans will either recognize or served as important areas in the game. All the while, they discuss what it is about Shenmue that’s earned it the cult following it enjoys today.

Koralik and Yusuf posit that a big part of Shenmue’s success is found in just fully-realized its world is. The inhabitants of Dobuita Street appeared to have lives of their own; The world had its own weather, and players could interact with just about everything they found there as they would in real life. In short, the creators of Shenmue did everything they could to immerse players in the game’s world. Many of these features are par for the course now, but could be considered groundbreaking in the game’s heyday.

As seen in the video below, there are several portions of Dobuita Street that very closely resemble their in-game counterparts. Not everything is the same of course. Considering that the original Shenmue was developed for the Sega Dreamcast, a perfect representation wasn’t really going to be feasible. That said, the similarities are still striking despite the fact that it’s been almost twenty years since the game was originally released. That level of attention to detail is nothing short of admirable.

Now that Shenmue III has been officially delayed to 2019, hopefully they’ll use the extra time to apply a similar kind of polish and scrupulous craftsmanship to it; the kind that’s kept fans talking about the series for the past nineteen years and which has indirectly enabled the project to get off the ground in the first place.

pokemon-generation-iv-rhyperior

So it looks like Generation IV Pokémon will be introduced into Pokémon GO soon. Generation IV has the distinction of having the most new evolutions of previously established Pokémon of any Generation, so keeping this in mind there are certain Pokémon you can catch right now that will help you to complete your Pokédex once Sinnoh Pokémon are introduced into the game. Below is a list of currently available Pokémon that you should start stocking up on, along with a description of what will likely be necessary for their eventual evolutions once Gen IV hits the game.

Roselia

Roselia gains a new evolution in Gen IV in the form of Roserade, so catching a bunch of Roselia now will probably serve you well once Gen IV is introduced into the game. Roselia also gets a new baby evolution in Gen IV, Budew. Budew will likely only be available via Eggs, so there isn’t really anything you can do to prepare for that other than stocking up on Egg Incubators. However, since Roselia will go from having one evolutionary stage to three in Gen IV, it’s likely that Budew will evolve into Roselia with 25 Roselia Candies, and then Roselia into Roserade with 100 Roselia Candies. So you should probably try to catch quite a few Roselia so that once Sinnoh Pokémon come to the game, you’ll be able to evolve a Roselia immediately with the 100 Candies you’ve been collecting. It’s also worth noting that in the mainline games Roselia evolves into Roserade using a Shiny Stone, and while not all Pokémon that need Stones or other items to evolve in the mainline games need one to evolve in Pokémon GO, it’s possible that you’ll have to happen upon a Shiny Stone at a PokéStop before being able to evolve your Roselia. In fact, there are a lot of Pokémon in Gen IV that need items to evolve. When Gen II was introduced into Pokémon GO, only a few of the Pokémon that need items to evolve in the mainline games needed items to evolve in the mobile spin-off, so it’s certainly possible that Roselia won’t need a Shiny Stone to evolve in GO, but you should be prepared to visit a ton of PokéStops anyway to collect Razor Claws, Protectors, Magmarizers and whatever other evolution items may become necessary.

Aipom

Aipom gains the evolution Ambipom in Gen IV, so you should probably collect as many Aipoms as you can to stock up on Aipom Candies. In the mainline games, Aipom evolves into Ambipom by leveling up while knowing the move Double Hit. Given how moves work in Pokémon GO, however, I can’t imagine they’d try to enforce this. Instead, they’ll probably just make Aipom evolve with 50 Aipom Candies.

Misdreavus and Murkrow

Both Misdreavus and Murkrow gain new evolutions in Gen IV and both need a Dusk Stone in order to evolve in the mainline games. Pokémon GO might include a Dusk Stone item that you’ll need to evolve Misdreavus into Mismagius and Murkrow into Honchkrow, which you’ll be able to get randomly at a PokéStop. Regardless of whether you do end up needing Dusk Stones or not, it’s likely that you’ll need 50 Candies for both of these Pokémon to get them to evolve.

Sneasel

In Gen IV, Sneasel evolves into Weavile when leveled up at night while holding a Razor Claw. This is a lot of rules to enforce, and since Sneasel is the only Pokémon to use the Razor Claw as an evolutionary item, I can see Pokémon GO forgoing all these complications and just requiring 50 Sneasel Candies for evolution. That being said, be prepared to visit a ton of PokéStops if a Razor Claw is necessary for evolution.

Magnemite and Magneton

The Magnemite line gets a new evolution in Gen IV, Magnezone. The Gen IV weird evolution methods continue with this one, as in the mainline series Magneton will only evolve into Magnezone by leveling it up in specific locations. Again, I don’t think this is very likely to happen in Pokémon GO and they’ll probably just require 100 Magnemite Candies to do the job.

Lickitung

Lickitung evolves into Lickilicky in Gen IV, and like with Aipom and Ambipom, requires a specific move to be known while leveling up to evolve in the mainline games. In Pokémon GO, you’ll probably just need 50 Lickitung Candies.

Rhyhorn and Rhydon

The Rhyhorn line also gets a new evolution in Gen IV, as Rhydon evolves into Rhyperior in the mainline games by trading a Rhydon that is holding a Protector. Again, you might need to get a Protector from a random PokéStop drop, but regardless of whether a Protector is necessary or not, you’ll probably need 100 Rhyhorn Candies to evolve Rhydon into Rhyperior in Pokémon GO.

Tangela and Yanma

Tangela evolves into Tangrowth and Yanma evolves into Yanmega in Gen IV. Both evolve by leveling up while knowing Ancientpower in the mainline games, but, once again, Pokémon GO will probably just necessitate 50 Candies for their evolutions.

Electabuzz and Magmar

Electabuzz and Magmar are more weird item evolutions in Gen IV, with the former needing to hold an Electirizer while being traded to evolve into Electivire and the latter needing to hold a Magmarizer while being traded to evolve into Magmortar. Electirizers and Magmarizers will likely be available from PokéStops if necessary for evolutions, but either way, both new evolutions will probably require 100 Candies.

Togepi and Togetic

Togetic evolves into Togekiss through use of a Shiny Stone in Gen IV, so once again, you may need to acquire a Shiny Stone from a PokéStop, but you will almost definitely need 100 Candies for the evolution as well.

Eevee

Eevee gains both the Grass-Type Leafeon and the Ice-Type Glaceon as evolutions in Gen IV, and we can probably expect that both will be attainable by having Eevee randomly evolve into one after giving it 25 Eevee Candies or by giving it a specific nickname before evolving it, as is the case with the other Eeveelutions. Of course, we’ll have to wait for dataminers to find out what those nicknames are once Gen IV is introduced into the game.

Gligar

In Gen IV, Gligar evolves into Gliscor when leveling up at night while holding a Razor Fang. Like with Sneasel and Weavile, it’s probably likely that Pokémon GO will opt for a simple 50 Candy evolution instead, though a Razor Fang may be necessary to attain from a PokéStop.

Swinub and Piloswine

The Swinub line gets a new evolution in Gen IV, with Piloswine evolving into Mamoswine if leveled up while knowing Ancientpower. Like other previously discussed move-specific evolutions, it’s likely that Pokémon GO will just require Candies for evolution, and Mamoswine will probably necessitate 100 Swinub Candies specifically.

Porygon and Porygon2

Porygon needed the Up-Grade item to evolve into Porygon2 when Gen II was introduced into Pokémon GO, so it’s likely that Porygon2 will need a Dubious Disc to evolve into Porygon-Z once Gen IV is introduced. It will also probably need 100 Porygon Candies.

Ralts and Kirlia

Here we have the first split evolution line of Gen IV. Similar to how Gloom needs 100 Oddish Candies to evolve into Vileplume or both 100 Candies and a Sun Stone to evolve into Bellossom, it’s likely that Kirlia will need 100 Ralts Candies as well as a Dawn Stone to evolve into Gallade, while still needing just 100 Candies to evolve into Gardevoir. It’s also possible that only male Kirlias will be able to evolve into Gallade, as is the case in the mainline games.

Nosepass

Nosepass is another Pokémon that will only evolve in certain locations in the mainline games. In Pokémon GO, you’ll probably just need 50 Nosepass Candies to evolve it into Probopass.

Duskull and Dusclops

The Gen IV evolution in the Duskull line, Dusclops, is another one that requires an item in the mainline games. Pokémon GO will very likely require 100 Duskull Candies for evolution, and possibly require the Reaper Cloth item, which would be attainable from PokéStops.

Snorunt

Snorunt also has a split evolution line in Gen IV, so it’s likely that it will need 50 Snorunt Candies along with a Dawn Stone to evolve into Froslass. In the mainline games, only female Snorunts can evolve into Froslass, so that may be a factor in Pokémon GO as well.

Eggs

Along with the previously mentioned Budew, Gen IV introduces a ton more baby Pokémon which will very likely only be attainable by hatching Eggs. Due to this, it will probably behoove you to stock up on as many Egg Incubators as you can. New baby Pokémon in Gen IV include Budew (evolves into Roselia), Chingling (evolves into Chimecho), Bonsly (evolves into Sudowoodo), Mime Jr. (evolves into Mr. Mime), Happiny (evolves into Chansey), Munchlax (evolves into Snorlax), Riolu (evolves into Lucario) and Mantyke (evolves into Mantine).

We-Happy-Few-Happiness-basics

The initial reaction to We Happy Few’s early access release was mixed at best, with many players expressing disappointment with the game’s focus on survival mechanics over almost everything else. However, Compulsion Games rose to the task and has been doing a better job of communicating exactly what We Happy Few actually is ever since. First and foremost, the game is about surviving as a normal person in a crazed world, something that the game’s latest trailer does a great job of placing front and center in the viewer’s mind.

Compulsion released a short, gameplay teaser for We Happy Few before it entered early access, but it showed-off the game’s environment and themes more than it did the actual gameplay. The same could be said of the short teaser released at the end of May. Thankfully for those not already in the know about the game, this newest trailer does a better job. Alongside the creepy characters and unsettling environment, Compulsion Games has folded-in brief looks at questing, character building, and crafting. Oh and combat too; one mustn’t forget that. We Happy Few’s combat was front and center this time, showing-off everything from basic melee moves to massively effective environmental hazards. If the game’s other systems compliment it as well as they appear to in this trailer, then it should make for some exciting gameplay experiences.

We Happy Few certainly has potential, but it all depends on whether or not Compulsion Games has put the game’s stay in early access to good use. When it first entered early access players criticized it for a lack of story and overzealous survival meters that interfered with the rest of the game. Pre-release media seems to indicate that the game will have a fully realized story when it launches for all platforms on August 10, so hopefully it’s just a matter of making sure players aren’t too busy surviving to have some fun during their time with We Happy Few.

Curious about how We Happy Few fared in early access? Then, take a minute to check out our impressions. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the trailer below.

Activision and Treyarch have revealed the Black Ops 4 Multiplayer & Blackout beta dates.  The testing will arrive in a couple of different phases, with PlayStation 4 owners getting the first chance to go hands on with Black Ops 4 multiplayer on August 3rd with an Xbox One and PC beta arriving shortly after.

In September, another beta will arrive, and this one will give players their first hands-on with Call of Duty’s spin on Battle Royale in the new Blackout Mode.  An exact date for the beta of Blackout has not been announced at this time, but it’s expected that it will also arrive on the PlayStation 4 first as well.

PlayStation 4 owners will get double the beta time, with an exclusive three day beta before the PC and Xbox One release.

For the console beta, players will need to have a Private Beta key that will be received when pre-ordering the game.  Those who pre-order on the Xbox or PlayStation stores will automatically be given access to the game on the dates below.  On the PC, anyone with a Battle.net account will be able to play the beta, but those who pre-order the game will get one day of early access to the beta on August 10th.

The exact times for the beta on all platforms can be found below.

Black Ops 4 Beta Times

The next Pokemon GO Community Day will be more than just a single day. Featuring fan-favorite Eevee, the next big event for the hugely popular mobile game will take place on Saturday, August 11th as well as Sunday, August 12th. This doubles the usual time windows from three hours on one day, to three hours on two separate days. The likely goal is to allow more players to participate, as many complained that a sudden event or other things got in the way of past Community Day events.

Eevee was a bit of a surprise for many, as fans have been speculating about what the next featured Pokemon would be. It does fit with the recent patterns for the game though, and for those who don’t live where Eevee spawns regularly, this could be a huge opportunity. Of course, the questions now are, what special moves will Eevee have and what sorts of special features will be activated for the two day event?

Eevee is unique among other Pokemon GO characters in that he evolves into different types of characters and at random. Aside from some special circumstances, players don’t know what will happen when they hit that evolve button. Will there be a way to direct your evolutions for this event? We’ll find out when Niantic release more info ahead of the August Pokemon GO Community Day events.

Koei Tecmo has announced that the most recent title in Gust’s Atelier series, Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World, will be coming to the West on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC this winter.

As mentioned before, Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists is the latest entry in Gust’s long-running Atelier series (it’s due out in Japan later this year). However, it also holds the distinction of arriving during the series’ 20th anniversary, so not only will it include many of the characters from previous entries (Salburg, Arland, Dusk and Mysterious trilogies), but the game will also have a focus in town-building.

Specifically, you will be playing as a woman named Nelke von Lestamm, a young noblewoman who has no capacity as an alchemist and thus aims to become a government official instead. Since she was young, she had a particular fondness for the ancient legend of the Sage of Granzweit, a tale of the Granzweit Tree which is said to bestow great power upon those whom discover it, and soon gets a chance to indulge in her childhood fantasies when she hears a rumor that the tree in question can be be found within her father’s lands near the small village of Westwald.

This is where the aforementioned town-building feature comes into play, as she gets her father’s permission to search for the tree, but only if she becomes governor of the area and develops Westwald into a prosperous city.

It was only a month ago that Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists was announced for Japan, so there aren’t a significant number of details known about the game just yet. That said, there is one thing we know about: the town-building itself. Using the money earned during exploration, Nelke will be able to expand and design Westwald to her liking, and the specific items available within will be dependent on which alchemists come there. Since it looks like players will be able to design the city the way they want, it looks like this will be more reminiscent of Dark Cloud, rather than the “city simulator-esque” Kingdom Building in Ni no Kuni 2.

Going this route is ambitious for sure, though with titles like Nights of Azure 2 and Blue Reflection, such ventures aren’t all too uncommon for Gust. However, with the game slated to come out so soon after the JP release, not to mention within the same year as Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, there’s a good reason to believe that the localization will suffer. In particular, it’s likely the game won’t be English dubbed — something that caused Atelier Lydie & Suelle to rub fans the wrong way.

So while the concept of an Atelier x Dark Cloud mashup featuring characters from previous entries will certainly excite fans, the thought of yet another undubbed game is sure to piss more than a few off.

Check out the official website here and a trailer showcasing Atelier’s 20-year history below:

When Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! were first announced, series producer and director Junichi Masuda explained that the new games were heavily influenced by, though not direct remakes of, 1998’s Pokémon: Yellow Version. There were a number of things that made Yellow Version unique and stand out from Red and Blue, despite also taking place in the Kanto region. Things like having Pikachu as a starter, and having that Pikachu follow you around in the overworld instead of staying in its PokéBall, were meant to reflect the popular Pokémon anime, which led a number of fans to the games. This mechanic is reflected in Pokémon: Let’s Go with the inclusion of having your starter (either Pikachu or Eevee, depending on your game) always on the player character’s shoulder or head, rather than in a PokéBall, while also allowing other Pokémon in your party to follow you around in the overworld.

Another tie-in with the TV show present in Yellow Version was the inclusion of the characters Jessie and James from the anime’s version of Team Rocket. Since Pokémon started as a video game series, you see characters that originated in the games appearing in the show all the time, but you almost never see characters that originated in the show appearing in the games. However, in a new video that was recently uploaded to the official Japanese Pokémon YouTube channel, it was confirmed that Jessie and James will be returning to the games as they will appear in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! It’s easy to miss, since they’re only in the video for a quick second, but you can spot them at around 54 seconds into the video.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! will be released on November 16 for Nintendo Switch.

When Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! were first announced, one of the major changes from more traditional mainline Pokémon games fans noticed was that wild Pokémon cannot be battled in these new games; rather, players can only either try to catch them Pokémon GO-style or run away. One of the worries this led to was what this would mean for encounters with Legendary Pokémon, as many worried that these epic confrontations would be reduced to just chucking Balls.

However, a new video was recently uploaded to the official Japanese Pokémon YouTube channel, which clearly shows the player battling the Legendary Pokémon Zapdos (0:37-0:39 in the video) and Moltres (0:50-0:51), rather than just throwing Balls at them. So rest assured, you will still have to battle Legendaries in order to capture them, rather than just throwing PokéBalls like you’ll be doing for normal wild Pokémon encounters. It is not yet clear if simply defeating a Legendary in battle will automatically add it to your team, which would seem to be the more beginner-friendly thing to do, or if the player will be given a chance to catch Legendaries using the normal catching sequence once the Legendary has been defeated in battle, which would be the more Pokémon GO thing to do.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! will be released on November 16 for Nintendo Switch.

Niantic have been celebrating the second anniversary of Pokémon GO, which took place on July 6, with a number of both in-game and real-world events. The company’s latest celebration of this milestone, however, is one that seems to promise the inclusion of new Pokémon into the game soon.

The official Pokémon GO Twitter page recently Tweeted out a picture for the game’s second anniversary. The picture includes the female and male playable characters, Professor Willow and the three teams’ leaders, as well as several Pokémon spanning the three Generations already included in the game. However, observant fans will notice that Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup are also present in the picture, despite the fact that they haven’t yet appeared in-game. For those unaware, Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup are the three starter Pokémon from Generation IV, and their inclusion in this picture would seem to imply that they, and likely more Gen IV Pokémon, are coming to the game soon.

Pokémon GO launched with only Kanto Pokémon in July of 2016, before growing to include Johto Pokémon in February of the following year, seven months into the game’s life. Hoenn Pokémon started appearing in the game during last year’s Halloween event, about eight months after the inclusion of Johto Pokémon. Looking at this timeline, it would make sense for Sinnoh Pokémon to start appearing the in the game soon, as it has been about nine months since Hoenn Pokémon first started appearing in the game. Obviously, we still have to wait for an official announcement before we can draw any real conclusions.

Remnant-from-the-ashes-header2

With the November release of Darksiders III now only a handful of months away, perhaps the last thing that anyone would expect to hear from Gunfire Games is the announcement of a brand new IP. Yet, that’s exactly what’s happened; Today, the developer released a brief trailer for their latest project: Remnant: From the Ashes.

Remnant: From the Ashes is set in some sort of post-apocalypse caused by inter-dimensional invaders known as “The Root.” The few humans who’ve managed to escape destruction now barely manage to carve out a meager existence in the ruins of the old world. Yet, it seems there’s still hope. Some survivors still possess the technology to travel between worlds; meaning that there’s still a chance to eventually take back what’s been lost. This, it seems is where the games players enter the scene.

Unlike Darksiders III’s gameplay, which revolves around a defined, solo character performing super-human feats, Remnant: From the Ashes appears to offer a more grounded experience based around cooperative play. Players will be able to define their own survivor and grow them along the character archetype that best suits their preferred play-style. It should be mentioned that cooperative play doesn’t appear to be a requirement for enjoying Remnant: From the Ashes; it’s just highly recommended.

Aside from its character creation and building system, Remnant: From the Ashes’ other key feature appears to be a world-generation system. According to the official Remnant: From the Ashes website, players will have plenty of opportunities to not only travel to dynamically-generated worlds, but also to pick up rare loot and engage in battle against extremely dangerous enemies. As just about everyone, including Gunfire Games, says there’s strength in numbers. With these worlds being at least partially randomly generated, it stands to reason that some will be easy to explore as a solo player, but others will be difficult even for a full squad of four survivors.

As they’ve only just announced Remnant: From the Ashes, Gunfire Games hasn’t yet stated when fans can expect to see it release. However, gamers can rest assured that they’ll at least be able to enjoy it on their platform of choice, as it’s been announced that Remnant: From the Ashes will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It’s likely that substantial details won’t emerge until after the release of Darskiders III. So for now, why not take a moment and enjoy the game’s announcement trailer?

Once again, the map has changed following the release of the Season 5 update for Fortnite: Battle Royale.  Rifts are opening up on the new Fortnite Map and it’s brought some brand new locations to explore in the game, including a drought that has turned the Moisty Mire into a desert outpost called Paradise Palms.

Players will find that the Dusty Divot has seen some growth since Season 4.  Anarchy Acres is now the Lazy Links in the Northern part of the map.  The most notable change does come to the old Moisty Mire section of the map which is now a massive desert area with a go-kart track and multiple mountainous areas, a town, and a go-kart track.

Alongside these map changes, when Fortnite players log-in for Season 5 play in Battle Royale they’ll find a new vehicle that can be used as well.  An All Terrain Kart vehicle (ATK) allows four players to traverse the map as the first vehicle of its kind in the game.

With the beginning of Season 5 for Fortnite: Battle Royale there is another Battle Pass for players to purchase.  It costs 950 V-Bucks to get started, but features up to 100 rewards in it that can net players rewards that total over 25,000 V-Bucks, according to Epic Games.

The Season 5 update is currently available for Fortnite on the PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and iOS.

Capcom has just released another trailer for the upcoming Monster Hunter: World x Final Fantasy XIV crossover event, revealing a bunch of new information and things to expect once it arrives next month.

First and foremost, we now know that it is due to arrive on Aug. 1 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST, representing the typical monthly update that we’ve received for the past few months.

More notably, however, the trailer revealed a bevy of new information about some of the rewards that hunters can earn during the event, as well as the Behemoth itself.

Based on what was shown, players will be able to earn armor that makes them look like Final Fantasy’s Dragoon class (the best class), along with a special Insect Glaive (looks like the Gae Bolg) to complete the ensemble. This, of course, makes total sense when considering that the Dragoon’s signature ability is Jump and the Insect Glaive allows you to do just that. On top of that, it appears the Kinsect you have while using this set is inspired by the Dragoon’s “Mirage Dive” ability in FFXIV which summons a small spirit dragon to crash into the enemy.

Furthermore, Cactuars will be replacing the Gajalakas in the Wildspire Waste and will shoot needles (maybe 1000?) when provoked, while your Palico and Poogle will be able to dress up as a Moogle and baby Behemoth, respectively.

Meanwhile, the highlight of the event — the Behemoth — looks like an absolute terror. As expected, it’s large, aggressive and summons meteors throughout the fight. In particular, there seems to be moments when it will send a particularly large meteor crashing down, but the trailer made it unclear whether players will be able to hide behind rocks to avoid the damage or if those same rocks help to increase the blast radius of the aforementioned attack, similar to Uragaan or Bazelgeuse.

Last but not least, there appears to be a mission in the Wildspire Waste where a Kulu-Ya-Ku will be carrying around Hydaelyn’s crystal, causing it to grow in size. It’s unclear if this will be an effect exclusive to the Kulu-Ya-Ku or if other monsters will be able to interact with the crystal in a similar manner.

All in all, this looks the collaboration that Monster Hunter fans had envisioned, and more than makes up for some of the lackluster ones that came before it. Aug. 1 can’t come soon enough.

Check out the new trailer below:

Later this year, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! will hit stores as the first mainline Pokémon games for the Nintendo Switch. We first got information about the games at a press conference a couple of months ago, as well as some hands-on time with the games at E3, but now some more information has come out.

The Pokémon Company recently uploaded a new video and shared a new blog post that each contain a bunch of information about Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! Most of the information in this video and blog post are things fans who have been following news about the games already know, but there was some new information given as well. For one thing, it has already been known that the player’s partner Pokémon (Pikachu or Eevee, depending on the version) will have customizable outfits, but the new video confirms that the player character will also be customizable to some degree. Meanwhile, the blog post shared that the Pokémon Oddish, Sandshrew and Growlithe will be exclusive to Let’s Go, Pikachu!, while Bellsprout, Vulpix and Meowth will be exclusive to Let’s Go, Eevee! Those who watched Junichi Masuda and company play through an extended version of the games’ E3 demo know that players will be required to have a grass or water Pokémon in their party before being able to challenge the first Gym Leader, Brock, and the blog post confirms that there will be a level or type requirement for every Gym.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! are set for release on November 16 for the Nintendo Switch.

Later this year, the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch on the Nintendo Switch. Those who are aware of the game likely know that its big draw is that it will include every character that has ever appeared in a Super Smash Bros. game, as well as introducing a few newcomers. Recently, Nintendo revealed their plans involving Smash Bros. amiibo.

Nintendo recently announced that two of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s new characters, Ridley and Inkling, will be getting amiibo that will be compatible with the new game. Wolf, who appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl but was absent in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS, will also be getting his own Smash Bros. amiibo. All three new amiibo will launch alongside the new game in December and will cost $15.99. Nintendo also stated that previously released Smash Bros. amiibo of various characters will be re-released at some point later this year and cost $12.99.

Though it hasn’t been officially announced, it is likely that other returning characters who were absent from for Wii U/for 3DS, such as Ice Climbers and Snake, will probably get amiibo of their own at some point down the line. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to launch on the Switch on December 7.

With the Monster Hunter franchise reaching all-new levels of popularity thanks to the success of Monster Hunter: World, it was only a matter of time before it would be adapted for TV audiences; and that is exactly what will happen come 2019 with the release of an animated special titled Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild 3D.

The special, which will be the result of a collaboration between Capcom and Pure Imagination Studios, tells the tale of a young man who wants to prove himself a hunter “worthy of recognition” and will soon get an opportunity to do just that once his village finds itself in the path of an Elder Dragon. The press release didn’t go into further detail about the movie, but considering that the promotional material features a Nerscylla, it’s likely that other monsters not present in World will make an appearance in the flick.

The announcement was also accompanied by a statement from Capcom’s Ryozo Tsujimoto and Pure Imagination Studios’ John P. Roberts, who said the following:

“We are thrilled to return fans to the universe of Monster Hunter and expand the series’ rich lore,” said Monster Hunter Series Producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto. “We think die-hard fans will appreciate our dedication to the source material while those uninitiated to the series will still be treated to an epic adventure in a wholly unique world.”

“At Pure Imagination, we focus on building content driven eco-systems and experiences that can live across multiple platforms of engagement,” said John P. Roberts, Chief Content Officer, Pure Imagination Studios. “With Monster Hunter, our talented and diverse group of animators, storytellers and producers, who have created content for LEGO, Marvel, and Star Wars, are collaborating with Capcom to create a powerful and engaging story universe to serve its enormous global fanbase.”

Production will be completed this Winter and the special is expected to premiere globally in 2019.

Grand Theft Auto V was the most bought and downloaded game from the PlayStation Store last month on PS4. Taking the top honors in Sony’s monthly sales chart is always a good sign, but for GTA V it’s something pretty crazy. The game released four years ago for the console, though it had already been available on PS3 for a year before that. It’s a sign of just how huge a success GTA V has been, and continues to be, though there are of course some extenuating circumstances.

GTA V is still at a discounted price on PS4, currently available for $19.79 instead of the typical $29.99 price. That’s probably what gave the game a push to the top of the list, but this long after release sales shouldn’t drive this many sales. A four year old game usually has already sold to the vast majority of the people who will play it during its lifetime, but with GTA V it seems like the audience just continues to grow and grow.

Of course, there were other games available for the month of June 2018 as well, with FIFA 18 and God of War rounding out the top three on PS4. Here’s the rest of that list and the top PSVR downloads…

PS4 Games

1 Grand Theft Auto V
2 FIFA 18
3 God of War
4 The Last Of Us Remastered
5 Detroit: Become Human
6 Mortal Kombat XL
7 Jurassic World Evolution
8 Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition
9 Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition
10 Gran Turismo Sport

PS VR Games

1 Job Simulator

3 DRIVECLUB VR
4 Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
5 DOOM VFR
6 Farpoint
7 Killing Floor: Incursion
8 Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

subnautica

Earlier this year, the indie game Subnautica was released and was met very positively by both critics and fans. However, many fans aren’t satisfied with just playing the game on PC or Mac and have asked for console versions of the game. Well, today (July 11) developer Unknown Worlds provided an update on the eventual Xbox One port of the game, as well as revealing some information on the newly announced PlayStation 4 version.

Unknown Worlds has expressed interest in bringing Subnautica to PS4 in the past, but today they made it official. The developer has teamed up with porting expert Panic Button, who have previously worked on the Nintendo Switch versions of Wolfenstein II and DOOM, as well as all console versions of Rocket League, to bring the underwater survival-adventure game to PS4. Panic Button also confirmed in a post on the official PlayStation blog that the PS4 version of Subnautica will be out sometime this holiday season. Unknown Worlds also recently announced that the previously confirmed Xbox One version of the game has been taking longer to port than they would have liked, so Panic Button will be helping them out with that port as well. Panic Button has stated that the Xbox One version will also release during the holidays.

Bandai Namco has announced that Code Vein will release in 2019 instead of the planned late-September release of this year.  While the game has seen a positive reception from fans since it was announced last year, the reasoning that Bandai Namco gives for the delay seems to be pretty standard.

According to a press release from the publisher, “Armed with knowledge of how well the game has already been received, we made the decision to postpone the release of Code Vein to further refine its gameplay in an effort to exceed the expectations fans already have of the title.  It was a difficult decision to make, but we feel it is the correct one.

Oddly enough Bandai Namco has shifted from an exact release date in September to a very vague “2019” release.  At this point we don’t know exactly how long Code Vein has been delayed until.  It could be a few months, or up to 15 months if the 2019 window holds.

When it does finally arrive, Code Vein is still slated for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Xbox Game Pass continues to be one of the best deals in video games right now. The subscription service allows Xbox One and Windows 10 PC players to download tiles from en ever-expanding catalog. That catalog is growing today with the announcement that Rocket League will be joining the selection.

Rocket League has been a huge success over the last three years. Originally released for free as part of the PS Plus program, the game saw its playerbase jump by multiple millions during the month long promotion. Since then the game has released on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and developed a following there as well, along with PC players who’ve been around since the beginning. While Switch players have always had to purchase the game, Xbox Game Pass will now allow those on Xbox One to enjoy the experience at no additional charge, outside their subscription fee.

Along with Rocket League comes Bomber Crew and Warhammer: Vermintide 2, adding more titles to the already impressive lineup. It’s clear that the service is one of Microsoft’s key focuses going forward. Games as a service has been a sort of buzz term for many years, but is really taking shape as the future for many. PS4 has its similar PlayStation Now service, but that requires you to stream the game, causing input lag and other issues. Xbox Game Pass on the other hand is just like owning the game, except that it will go away if you allow your membership to lapse.

Nintendo-Switch-Crossplay-Multiplatform

It feels like we’ve been talking about Nintendo going multiplatform for longer than the company has been developing video games. All this time, since the NES debuted, the company has been emphatic about their focus on a single platform: their own. Yet the topic always comes up whenever Nintendo has any sort of strife or struggle, as they somewhat are right now with slightly lower stock prices than many anticipated after E3. So, with this landscape of course someone asked (now former) company president Tatsumi Kimishima about any plans to go multiplatform. The answer was the same as always, but there’s still more info about crossplay in his answer.

Asked during the most recent stock holder meeting about Nintendo’s thoughts on crossplay, their relationships with other companies, and any plans to go multiplatform Kimishima answered “I will have to refrain from commenting directly about (crossplay in) Fortnite and Minecraft because those are not Nintendo titles. But I will say that our fundamental way of thinking about offering Nintendo titles on other platforms remains unchanged.”

Senior Executive Officer Susumu Tanaka followed up with some clarification on crossplay for Nintendo Switch, saying “Crossplay basically comes about from conversations between publishers and platform holders. We are inclined to do what we can to help publishers incorporate crossplay when that is what they want. The other parties involved also have a say in whether we are able to reach this outcome or not, so we will continue to discuss it with them.”

So crossplay is still on the menu for any developer who wishes to take advantage, and Nintendo will help facilitate the process somewhat. However, even if the stock price has dipped a bit (and let’s be real here, it’s way up thanks to the huge success of the Switch), Nintendo is not looking to go multiplatform any time soon. Let’s all reset our Nintendo is Doomed clocks for the next time this topic gets brought up in probably a week or two.

Far Cry 5 is one of the best games of 2018 so far, and players get to keep coming back due to a slew of post-launch DLC. Last month, “Hours of Darkness,” the first of three new DLC campaigns, was released and had players take a break from the game’s main location of Hope County in Montana to shoot through Vietnam. Now the second DLC, “Lost on Mars,” has a set release date.

Ubisoft recently announced in a press release that Far Cry 5‘s “Lost on Mars” DLC will become available next week on June 17. As you could probably guess from the title, “Lost on Mars” will change up the setting yet again, this time transporting the player to Mars, where they will attempt to thwart an impending invasion of Earth. A number of alien weapons will become available as part of this DLC, which will also be usable in the game’s main campaign, so you can ravage Hope County with alien technology. The launch of this DLC will also see Mars-based assets becoming available in the map editor Far Cry Arcade. The “Lost on Mars” DLC will be available as a stand-alone DLC or as part of the season pass or Gold Edition of the game.

Far Cry 5 is currently available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Dead Cells is finally coming out of Early Access and into full release on August 7th.  A combination of modern roguelike games and classic Metroid-style titles, Dead Cells has garnered a lot of fans while in Early Access on Steam.

Developed by Motion Twin, Dead Cells has been in Early Access for quite some time, but the full release will bring the game to more platforms.  On August 7th the game will arrive on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One alongside the PC, Mac, and Linux versions of the game.

The game will have a $24.99 price tag on it when it arrives, but for those who pre-order the game on consoles, they’ll get a 20% discount on the game which brings it down to $19.99.

Dead Cells has proven to be one of the most promising early access titles in recent years.  While the core pillars of the game are the roguelike replay value and Metroidvania style progression and upgrades system, it also has an incredible art style and snappy combat that features a ton of different weapons.

Motion Twin says that the game will feature 13 levels at launch with 4 bosses, 80 weapons, and 4 special powers.  The game will also feature a Spelunky style Daily Run Mode with Leaderboards on the PC version.

You can check out our impressions from the Early Access experience in Dead Cells below:
