Many of Nintendo’s new Amiibo figures have been hard to get from the very beginning. Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, and more have become collector’s items that fetch high prices on resale markets. However, the latest wave seems to be setting new levels of rarity and demand. Many Wave 3 Amiibos, especially the store exclusives like Shulk, Meta Knight, and Rosalina, are extremely difficult to find, with some stores even cancelling preorders due to low stock. Now we have a better idea of the situation thanks to a statement made by online retailer Play-Asia.
Because of the supply shortage from Nintendo, we regret having to inform you that all pre-orders right now are on hold
In a post on their website, Play-Asia goes into detail on the current predicament surrounding Amiibo Wave 3. They describe how they took preorders under the impression that they would have enough supply, but last minute changes left the US with too few Amiibo to meet the demand. “Because of the supply shortage from Nintendo, we regret having to inform you that all pre-orders right now are on hold and are on back-ordered status…Nintendo never gave us an indication that the stock levels would be so dangerously low, and we only opened pre-orders under the guarantee from our previous suppliers that we would be able to get them. As such, recent updates have left things in the current state.”
Despite the “dangerously low” stock, Play-Asia is currently not canceling preorders. Instead they are attempting to get additional Wave 3 figures from better stocked areas, such as Australia and the UK. This behavior mirrors some American Amiibo fan’s, who have turned to importing via the internet rather than try to track them down in store.
