Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is notable among the franchise for the sheer amount of change that is coming to the game. Jumping further into the future than ever before, Advanced Warfare is full of new technology that changes the gameplay significantly. The biggest shift for the game seems to be the exoskeleton, which grants players additional movement and combat abilities like higher jumping, cloaking, increased speed, and extra melee damage. This might be a bit upsetting to Call of Duty veterans though, so Sledgehammer Games is making it optional.

There will be a traditional playlist where you can play TDM, Dom, and CTF without boost jump, without your Exo

In an interview with Youtube user DvLZStaTioN, as reported by PC Gamer, Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield of Sledgehammer Games discuss Callof Duty: Advanced Warfare and its many upcoming multiplayer options. “We also understand that some players may want to go back to a more traditional style,” said Condrey. “So there will be a traditional playlist where you can play Team Deathmatch, Domination, CTF, and others without boost jump, without your Exo.”

They go on to discuss the importance of the exoskeleton to the game saying that they heard players asking for more change to the long-running first-person shooter series. “They told us that it’s time to change things up, and we’re also players, so we wanted to add our own feeling to the game,” explained Glen Schofield. “When we started adding the exoskeleton and we added the boost jump to it, it just changed the way you played the game. It gave verticality, it gave new ways for us to design the levels…It still feels like the game that you know and love, but I think once you start to play with the boost jump, you don’t want to go back.”

After seeing all of the single and multiplayer gameplay videos that have been hitting recently, I tend to agree with Mr. Schofield that the change is very welcome. Personally, I had drifted away from the Call of Duty franchise due to the stagnation of the gameplay, but Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has great potential to bring me back.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be released on November 4th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
