Driveclub Director Addresses Missing Shadows And Possibility Of Split-Screen

We’ve already had the release of Forza Horizon 2 recently for Xbox One owners, but now it is PlayStation 4 owners’ turn with their own racing game, Driveclub. The game has looked fantastic since it was first revealed, though it did go through a number of delays. With some videos popping up about the game, some have been questioning a few aspects of the racer, which led to the game’s director Paul Rustchynsky taking it upon himself to address some of those potential issues.

One of the biggest problems people have noticed in videos is the lack of shadows a lot of the time, which they saw as unrealistic. Rustchynsky took to NeoGAF to quell some of the concerns about this and explain why it may look this way. The following were some of his responses throughout the Driveclub thread that were culled together by Dualshockers.

  • “I have to admit that it took me a while to get used to this, but it is entirely physically accurate – we don’t use fake shadows or mask sunlight by ambient occlusion, which often hides this ‘effect’.”
  • “Under strong lighting conditions and from the right angle there won’t be a shadow visible beneath the car. To show this I took a car out into the Evo car park, parked it so the sun was from directly behind and held a camera up in the air at similar angle to the chase camera.”
  • “Nothing is faked or baked in this image either ; ) Number plates have been obviously obscured though.”
  • “Tunnel lighting has already been updated to look even better, you’ll hopefully notice the improvements in a future game update ; )”

Rustchynsky also addresses the lack of split-screen in the game when asked on Twitter by saying:

  • “There are no plans currently, bit it’s not out of the question.”

It’s good to know that there is a chance to see this feature eventually added to Driveclub, but it still doesn’t sound too likely.

Driveclub is set to release this Tuesday, October 7 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
