Microsoft finally ditching points scheme with Xbox 720

It looks like Microsoft is finally giving up on the points system that it has used for purchases on the Xbox Live Marketplace.  The Verge has revealed that a source familiar with Microsoft’s Next Xbox plans says that the company plans to implement a ‘gift card’ system.

The publication says that Microsoft will announce the new initiative either at next week’s Xbox reveal event, or at E3 in June.  It is also said that this new system will not just be Xbox-specific.  The Apple-like system will extend to Microsoft’s entire catelog of software, ranging from the Windows Store to the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Microsoft has yet to officially comment on the validity of these rumors.  Though if E3 and the Xbox Reveal Event pass without any word on the new system, it’s likely the rumors have turned out to be false.   Microsoft will reveal their next-generation Xbox on May 21st.
