Microsoft rumored to introduce self-publishing on Xbox One

by William Schwartz

Microsoft could be readying a reveal of a self-publishing initiative for the Xbox One, that would give indie developers a big reason to develop for the new console. According to a rash of rumors that speculate Microsoft’s intentions at an upcoming developer conference, the console may be getting a lot more indie-friendly.

The rumors are coming from multiple sources on Twitter, and have been compiled by Gaffers.

Developers are speculating that Microsoft will announce a more supportive stance, one that has developers flocking to the PlayStation 4 to publish smaller games. A keynote address is scheduled for later this week, perhaps we’ll find out more about whether this rumor holds true.

Since Sony’s announced its commitment towards indie development back at GDC, we’ve heard from high-profile developers making games that will only arrive on the PlayStation 4 and PC platforms.  While it seems like a no-brainer for Microsoft to offer a similar path to market for these games on the Xbox One, it’s not a policy that they’ve officially confirmed at this point.
