Modern Warfare 3 will release later this year and up until now many of the major criticisms being levied against the game (which hasn’t been shown to the public yet) is that the franchise is lacking innovation.  Yet with the growing number of fans of the series, they can’t get enough of the Call of Duty experience regardless of which platform you choose to look at.  But Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 might be more innovative than you think according to Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling. In a recent interview the advisor claimed that the franchise is in a unique situation for Modern Warfare 3.  The Modern Warfare franchise which has been traditionally handled by Infinity Ward, has some help this time around.

After the fallout of the Zampella and West debacle that ousted the studio heads of Infinity Ward from the Call of Duty franchise, Activision turned to the industry to pick up the slack.  They brought on the newly created Sledgehammer Games Studios, and Raven Software to work on the title with Infinity Ward.  The Call of Duty franchise has always seen a split duty between yearly developments.  One year Infinity Ward would release a Modern Warfare title, and the next, Treyarch would release their on-going war story.  Bowling touched on the natural progression of the franchise and how he thinks that it’s great for the game in a recent interview.

“I can only speak on behalf of Infinity Ward, but I think it’s a natural progression of how things have been going in general.  We’re at a state now in the Call of Duty franchise, where you have several teams working on CoD that have their own very distinct styles on what type of gameplay they deliver,” Bowling said.

“I think that’s a great thing for Call of Duty in general, especially if you’re having games come out every year,” added Bowling. “To have very distinct flavors and to have very distinct styles, it allows us to innovate in different ways and not feel forced to innovate in the same ways and build on the same interactions in the other games.”

Bowling has already spoke out on some of the changes that are coming to Modern Warfare 3, and judging by the nature of them, more than a few are likely to be surprised with the new additions and exclusions that will be apparent in the new game.  The inclusion of a re-vamped Spec-ops mode is one such change, but there are others likely waiting in the wings as we barrel toward the Call of Duty: XP event in Los Angeles where all shall be revealed.
