Dragon Ball Super episode 40 has just ended and it might be the most shocking turn of events that the series has had to date. We see the conclusion to the Goku vs Hit fight and also the tournament itself. Not a lot of people would have guessed how it ended.

Anyway, episode 40 of Dragon Ball Super begins where we left off as Goku and Hit are in the middle of a huge ki blast battle. The battle is so intense that Vados and Whis have to use their powers to make sure everyone is safe.

Apparently after the explosion, nothing really happens as Goku and Hit are left unscathed. Hit then says to Goku that his time skipping technique is even stronger that it was before. As we know from last week, Hit is able to adapt and get stronger the longer a fight goes.

Goku on the other hand is visibly struggling. He cannot sustain the Kaioken form much longer. We see that he is starting to get muscle spasms. His body cannot cope for much longer.

Champa is getting agitated on the side because he wants Hit to win the fight with dirty tactics. Hit doesn’t want to do that as he wants to win fair and legitimately.

As the two power up to fight again, we see Hit use his time skip technique again on Goku as he does another Killer Instinct-like combo. Goku looks like he’s out but he powers up again to punch Hit in the face. There is a funny moment where Hit crashes into Champa portrait. Beerus is laughing while Champa is not too happy about it.

Both fighters are tired at this point in the fight as they are breathing hard. It appears one of them might have to give up sooner rather than later. It’s at this time in the fight that Goku knows Hit is holding back his true power. Goku wants the no killing rule to be changed so he can see what Hit can really do.

Goku feels Hit is holding back because Hit will get disqualified if he kills Goku using his more powerful techniques. Goku isn’t scared of dying since they can always revive him using the Namekian Dragon Balls. They did this already by wishing back Piccolo offscreen.

Champa is excited that Goku wants the rules to be changed as he knows what type of techniques Hit still has up his sleeves. Beerus on the other hand doesn’t like it as he doesn’t want Goku to lose.

Thing get more interesting when Goku and Hit both look at each other and realize they are just puppets in this tournament as the real fight is between Champa and Beerus. Speaking of Champa and Beerus, the two end up fighting one another.

As this is happening, Goku does the unthinkable and steps out of the ring to eliminate himself. Goku knows Monaka is next and he feels he can still win it for the team. Little does Goku know, Monaka is nothing but a weakling!

When Goku is out of the ring, Hit is announced as the winner! It feels like Goku quit the fight because he was getting tired. Goku mentions that he should lay off the Kaioken technique as it stiffens up his whole body and makes him weaker.

Monaka is scared out of his boots because he didn’t expect to actually fight. Beerus thought Goku would have won for Universe 7. Beerus is angry and scared as well because he knows Monaka is a fraud. There’s no chance in hell that Monaka will be able to beat Hit.

However Hit must have taken a page out of Android 18 because he’s sick of Champa so he throws in the towel. Instead of beating Monaka easily, he lets Monaka punch him and he pretends to fly out of the ring to eliminate himself. You will remember that Android 18 did this to let Hercule win the Martial Arts tournament.

As Universe 7 are celebrating their victory, Champa wants to Kill Hit. Beerus tells Goku that he cannot do anything as Champa’s universe are his own rules. However, a new character named Zeno then comes in and surprises everyone. Zeno is the ruler of all of the 12 universes in Dragon Ball Super. Champa and Beerus are shocked by his appearance and the episode ends like that.

I have to say, the tournament had an anticlimactic ending. It felt real abrupt how Goku and Hit both threw in the towel after going all-out for the past few episodes. However, having Monaka win the tournament is a nice twist as it would have been too predictable if Goku won it.

We will review episode 41 next week as we learn more about the Zeno character. Dragon Ball Super is not ending soon as it sounds like a new saga is just about to start. Hopefully it’s as good as the Champa saga.
