Retro Studios formed back in 1998 as a first-party studio of Nintendo and debuted their first game four years later with the critically acclaimed Metroid Prime. Since then, Retro Studios has only worked on three series, the Metroid Prime trilogy, Mario Kart 7, and both Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. We’ve heard that Retro has been working on their next title, to no one’s surprise, and they seem to be teasing a reveal during E3.

Ahead of the Nintendo Digital Event next Tuesday that is bound to be full of different games, Retro Studios used their official Twitter to make an intriguing tease.

“Can you dig it?

This tweet certainly does not give us much to go on at all. It could just have been something witty that their social media director put alongside the link to the E3 coverage, with no meaning whatsoever. There is also the much more likely chance that they could be teasing something.

The next Metroid title is what most Nintendo fans want to see be announced as coming from Retro. Technically, Samus has explored many a cave and dug through the ground with bombs, but that is a major stretch.

Interestingly, a trademark was discovered by a poster on NeoGAF today for “Diddy Kong” in Europe, which was filed by Nintendo. Could Retro have a Diddy Kong spinoff title in the works or could this be the rumored sequel to Diddy Kong Racing from Monster Games? Either way, Retro is almost certainly going to unveil their latest game next Tuesday, so stay tuned.
