The Last Guardian is up there with the likes of Final Fantasy Versus XIII as games that were announced ages ago that many thought may never actually come out. However, 2016 is setting up to be a special year as the latter is finally coming this year under a new name as Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian has now been confirmed to still be coming this year as well.

The Last Guardian played a role in last year’s Sony E3 “conference of dreams” that also delivered the reveal of Shenmue 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake. After being initially revealed for the PS3, the game was seemingly in limbo for years before the re-reveal that said the game would be coming in 2016.

We haven’t really heard any information since, so some people were worried that we might see a delay to 2017, but it has been confirmed that The Last Guardian is indeed still coming in 2016.

This news come courtesy of the latest Edge magazine that has a The Last Guardian cover this month. According to Ben Skipper of the International Business Times who has gotten the issue, The Last Guardian’s director Fumito Ueda confirmed to Edge that the game is indeed coming in 2016 still.

“Since this is the year we will see the game’s release, I do have some worries, but I’m also very excited.”

The magazine’s cover story also revealed a few gameplay details that Edge got to witness through a special demo, including that the playable boy will have a mirrored shield that he can point in areas, which the creature Trico can then shoot with red lightning that comes from its tail.

With The Last Guardian’s 2016 release date being reaffirmed, it sounds like we could be getting a big showing from the hotly anticipated game at E3 next month, so we’ll have to stay tuned to see just what Sony has in store for us.
