The Tomb Raider franchise has spawned a number of different games, as well as two movies that starred Angelina Jolie. The first movie was a financial success, but was not all that well received, while the second did much worse in the box office. With the popularity of the recent reboot game series though, it made sense when it was announced that a new movie was coming and now it has officially entered production.
The new Tomb Raider movie is coming from MGM and GK Films and is set to star Oscar winner Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, with Walton Goggins also set to play a large role. The movie is being directed by Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, with Tomb Raider being his first Hollywood film.
We knew that production was going to start soon and Uthaug was the one to make the official announcement through his Instagram where he posted a picture of the clapperboard for the movie with the simple statement “And we’re off #tombraider” accompanying it.
There obviously is a lot of concern about this movie, considering the history that video game based movies have had. People had a lot of hope that Assassin’s Creed would be good, but that bombed both critically and financially, so Tomb Raider is one of the next major chances for a good video game movie.
What should help with this one though is that the Tomb Raider story is a little more simplistic to pull off than the convoluted story that can plague the Assassin’s Creed story sometimes. Not to mention the fact that Lara Croft is a well known character that people will recognize, which should at least help with ticket sales.
Tomb Raider is more than a year out at this point, with is scheduled to release on March 16, 2018, the spot previously held by The Flash movie. More information is bound to come soon with the start of filming, so stay tuned.
