A new job listing suggests that Sony is already in the planning stages for the PlayStation 5 console.

Sony is currently looking for a “Senior Game Programmer”. The job description is where it describes they might be in the planning stages for the PlayStation 5 console already,

The job description says:

We have an exciting opportunity at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation). We seek a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system. For someone passionate about gaming this is a very rare opportunity. After reviewing the below job profile, if this is you, please apply!

The job listing was posted recently so it’s obvious Sony isn’t talking about the PlayStation 4. It’s been 19 months since the PlayStation 4 came out, so it’s feasible Sony is in the very early stages of mapping out the PlayStation 5.

Further down the job description, it talks about the PlayStation 4 by name. It’s not referred to as a “next generation gaming system” like highlighted above. This is another sign that Sony is already planning a new console of some kind.

The PlayStation 4 has yet to reach its peak, so it’s too early to talk about the PlayStation 5 yet. Although this could be a sign the current console generation will not last as long as the previous one. The PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii console generation lasted quite a long time. It will be interesting to see how long the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U generation lasts.
