Tetsuya Nomura has admitted that he was surprised to be named as the director for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Nomura was interviewed by Weekly Famitsu (via Kotaku) as he talked more about how the Final Fantasy 7 Remake came to be. Nomura himself didn’t expect to be the director.

Nomura explained during pre-production for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, all he did was offer his opinions on how it should be done. There were no discussions with him on who was going to direct it.

Nomura only found out he was the director for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake when Square Enix showed an internal company video. The video at the end said “Director Tetsuya Nomura”.

At that point, Nomura called Yoshinori Kitase (the original version’s director) on the phone. Kitase replied to him saying “of course” you are the director and that was that.

Tetsuya Nomura will be busy with both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3. Both games don’t have a release window yet, so it could be years until they come out.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was one of the biggest announcements from E3 2015. Many fans either screamed or cried tears of joy when the announcement was made. Their dreams finally came true.
