The Xbox One had a very rough start to the generation with the always online announcement and a focus on entertainment over games, but Phil Spencer has halped to right the ship since taking over. Focusing back on games again in the last few years, the Xbox One had a very good year in 2016, including the very popular Xbox One S. While perhaps their most risky upcoming venture in Scalebound has been cancelled, Spencer believes that the company needs to continue to take risks when it comes to their games.
Spencer has been very consistent over the years about responding to the community through Twitter and he has been continuing to do that all week since the announcement of the Scalebound cancellation.
Many fans were obviously disappointed with this news and the few Xbox exclusives it has left us with in 2017. One tweet to Spencer in particular discussed their worry about the current state of exclusives and asking him to please not stop taking risks with games after what happened to Scalebound, in which Spencer responded:
“Good feedback, I know we have to take risks, I realize right now probably sounds hollow but I agree”
He echoed this sentiment once again in another tweet that was a response to someone wishing Xbox the best, even though Scalebound was their most anticipated game.
“It hurt me as well and to the community I apologize. I want everything we start to turn out great, to take risks, create diversity”
Spencer was definitely the most Japanese style game in Microsoft’s arsenal, which they took the risk to partner with PlatinumGames on, even though the Xbox One is a non-seller in Japan. However, it is really good to hear that the Xbox team isn’t looking to stop taking risks, as that is often how we get the biggest surprises of all.
