Can Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens Top The Empire Strikes Back?
There is a lot of hype surrounding the release of Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens. Will the movie be able to top The Empire Strikes Back?
As reported by Variety, a survey conducted by Harris Interactive asked fans how excited they are for the next Star Wars movie. The results of the survey are very interesting to say the least.
Two thirds of those surveyed said the new film “will blow them away“. However, 63% expect Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens to be the best of the franchise. The latter result shows how optimistic and hyped fans are right now.
Although this is just a survey from a select number of people, it’s interesting to see that 63% of them think the new film will be the best Star Wars film ever.
Many Star Wars fans and film critics agree that The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the franchise. There are many reasons why it’s considered to be the best Star Wars film so The Force Awakens has a lot to live up to.
First of all, let’s address the big twist. The ending of The Empire Strikes Back is as iconic as the conclusion to the original Planet of the Apes movie. Back in 1980, nobody would have guessed that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s son. This is still one of the most shocking endings in film history.
Some other reasons why The Empire Strikes Back is so loved is because it introduced us to many cool new characters. Yoda made his first appearance and he surprised fans. The most powerful Jedi in the Universe ended up being a green muppet.
Not to mention the movie also saw the debut of Boba Fett. Boba Fett didn’t even have that much screen time in the film, but this didn’t stop people from loving him so much. He is now one of the most popular Star Wars characters of all time.
The other cool new character in the film was Lando Carlrissian. At first we think he’s a backstabber and a traitor. However, he only followed orders because he got threatened by Darth Vader. He is now a popular Star Wars character in his own right.
The action sequences in The Empire Strikes Back were iconic for its time too. We had a more athletic lightsaber fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Let’s not forget how awesome the Hoth battle at the beginning of the film too. That battle has been recreated so many times in video games and even parodied lots of times as well.
Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens does have the potential to be better, although it has some big shoes to fill. It’s hard to judge how good the movie is right now since it’s not even out yet.
Although I do find it interesting that the people that were surveyed think it will be the best Star Wars film ever. J.J. Abrams is a good director so there’s hope that it will at least be miles better than the prequels.
As for the new characters, Force Friday shows that people like them already. Kylo Ren and BB-8 seem to be the two new characters that everyone loves. Finn and Rey seem like they could be favorites when the film comes out.
However, the thing that might be hard for Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens to top is the epic ending from The Empire Strikes Back. Replicating such a huge twist is really hard to do in movies these days.
My guess is that Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens will still be a very awesome film. Although it probably won’t be able to top all of the epic moments that occurred in The Empire Strikes Back.
