Having a phone plan in the United States costs a lot of money. In fact, the U.S. is one of the most expensive countries in the western world for mobile coverage. As of 2024, mobile data in the U.S. costs around $6 per gigabyte on average.
According to Bro Bible, this is more than double the worldwide average of $2.59 per gigabyte. It’s also over 8 times more expensive than countries like Denmark and the United Kingdom. Not only do Americans pay more for their phone service, but the companies often don’t provide great customer service either.
One Verizon customer recently experienced this after claiming the company had been charging her incorrectly for months. Then things got even worse. TikTok user Keili Maluhia (@keilimaluhiaa) was checking her Verizon account when she found that the company had been wrongfully charging her for eight months. She also discovered a random $200 charge on her account. When she asked why, Verizon told her she “didn’t turn in my phone to trade it in.”
Verizon allegedly tried to negotiate down a refund they owed
Maluhia says she did turn in her phone the same day or the day after she did the trade-in. She then spent three hours on the phone with Verizon customer support. During the call, she claims she was disconnected, emails to the company bounced back, and employees refused to give their names.
Even though Verizon owed her over $240, Maluhia says the company kept trying to give her a smaller refund. “They’re like, ‘Let’s just call it a hundred bucks?’ And I was like, ‘Let’s not just call it a hundred bucks. It’s over $240,'” she said. This kind of frustrating customer service interaction isn’t uncommon in service industries.
She continued, “They’re like, ‘You’re right. Let’s-can I just do 200?’ And I was like, ‘Why the f**** are you heckling me for $20, $40, when you’re, like, a multi-million dollar company?'” While Maluhia believes the issue has been fixed, she says she hasn’t seen any changes on her account yet.
Problems like these appear to be common with Verizon. Many users claim Verizon has tried to charge them for phones they already returned. “People have been posting. You aren’t the only one. People are talking about it .. Verizon has dropped from top dog to like Third or Fourth place,” one person wrote in the comments.
Similar situations involving angry customers and business disputes have become increasingly common across different industries.
