Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Russian President Vladimir Putin has given up nothing in peace talks to end the war in Ukraine. He warned that the remaining disagreements could destroy any chance of a deal.
According to The Hill, Pompeo questioned the progress being reported. in the peace talks He said Putin has not made any real compromises so far, even though leaders claim they have reached 90 percent agreement on a peace plan.
“The adversary here, Vladimir Putin, has, to best I can tell, conceded literally nothing to date. And while they say there’s 90 percent agreement, I doubt that Vladimir Putin thinks that the relevant 10 percent that remains is anything he’s willing to give up on,” Pompeo said.
Land disputes and troop placements remain the biggest obstacles
Pompeo pointed out that the conflict is mainly about territory. Putin also does not want European military forces stationed near Russia’s borders as part of any security agreement. These demands could be deal-breakers that make peace impossible.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with American negotiators at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Sunday. He announced that talks on a 20-point peace proposal had made major progress. However, Trump’s weekend diplomatic meetings sparked controversy among some Republican leaders.
“This is about land. He also doesn’t want European forces on his border. That’s part of the security guarantee. I’ll bet that’s a poison pill for him,” Pompeo commented.
During a press conference with Trump, Zelensky said the peace framework was 90 percent complete. When reporters asked about the toughest remaining problems, Trump confirmed that land ownership was one of the main issues. Questions about Zelensky’s past business dealings continue to surface as negotiations progress.
Trump explained that some Ukrainian territory has already been taken by Russia. Other areas might be captured in the coming months, so Ukraine should make a deal now before losing more ground.
“I think the land, you’re talking about, some of that land has been taken. Some of that land is maybe up for grabs, but it may be taken over the next period of a number of months, and you’re better off making a deal now,” Trump explained to the reporters.
Putin has always wanted to control specific parts of Ukraine. The Russian leader says he will keep fighting until Ukrainian forces withdraw from all regions that Russia claimed nearly four years ago.
