Mortal Kombat X has been on an incredible hype train leading to its April 14th launch, but that train might be set to derail if the latest news isn’t received well. While speaking with IGN, NetherRealm Studios marketing manager Brian Goodman was asked whether the upcoming game would feature microtransactions. His answer was anything but reassuring as he seemed to dodge the question and push any response to a later date.

We are not releasing any details on that yet. Nothing to say about microtransactions yet.

“We are not releasing any details on that yet,” said Goodman when asked about the possible feature. “Nothing to say about microtransactions yet.” It’s those two “yets” that are bothering gamers the most. If the game categorically did not feature microtransactions then he would simply say “no,” but instead he simply says that they aren’t revealing that information at this time, implying that they will be announcing microtransactions later on.

Of course, microtransactions are not inherently bad, with many games employing them in a respectable and even beneficial manner. However, gamers have been soured by past experiences where games were greatly hindered by over-intrusive microtransactions. Especially in a game like Mortal Kombat X, where pieces are usually unlocked through play, cutting characters or stages out and offering them piecemeal can have a detrimental effect.

It seems likely, given the comments by Goodman, that Mortal Kombat X will feature some manner of microtransactions. The question now is how they will be implemented in the game. If they add to the game in some way, such as simply offering additional cosmetic items, then it might be good. However, there is always the risk that NetherRealm could get too greedy and end up tampering with the series’ previously successful formula too much.

We’ll find out when Mortal Kombat X launches on April 14th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
