Namco Bandai has confirmed that Bayonetta’s lead character designer helped create the new Tekken 7 character.

As reported a few days ago, Bandai Namco announced a new Tekken 7 character named Josie Rizal. A lot of fans love the character and wanted to know her designed her.

Tekken 7’s director, Katsuhiro Harada, confirmed on Twitter that Josie Rizal was designed by Mari Shimazaki. Shimazaki is the lead character designer for the Bayonetta series.

Harada also mentioned that Josie Rizal is indeed the first character in the Tekken series to be from the Philippines. Some people thought Mokujin was from the Philippines. Harada said the wooden fighter is actually from Japan.

Bandai Namco also confirmed a few new things about Josie Rizal in Tekken 7. The character’s idol is Jose Rizal who was a real-life national hero in the Philippines. Her fighting style is a mix of kickboxing and eskrima. Harada also said she has a “sad background”.

Feedback for Josie Rizal being in Tekken 7 has mostly been positive. A lot of Filipino fans love the fact a character from their country is in a Tekken game. Some felt her outfit was too skimpy, but most gamers didn’t seem to mind the design according to Harada.

Josie Rizal will be added to Tekken 7 in the near future. Right now, both Jin and Devil Jin are set to be included in the arcade version of the game.
