Star Wars 8 has been delayed from its Summer 2017 release as it will now come out in December 2017 instead.
Disney has just announced that Star Wars 8 will now be released on December 15th, 2017. This has been pushed back from its original May 26th, 2017 release date. Disney did not give a reason as to why the change has been made.
The only small piece of evidence that has been floating around is that the movie was undergoing rewrites. Originally, Episode 8 was to focus heavily on even newer characters. This included a new female lead as well as Benicio Del Toro rumored to play a new villain.
However, Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens became a huge hit. Not only did people love the returning characters, but they loved Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo Ren. Fan and critics alike praised the new cast. This is why rewrites are being made to concentrate more on The Force Awakens characters.
The only competition that Star Wars 8 might have to face is the release of Avatar 2 from James Cameron. That movie is supposed to be coming out around the same time in Winter 2017.
