When Starhawk was first unveiled at this year’s E3, it evoked some excited reactions from players and journalists alike though it was largely overshadowed by other major titles in what is undoubtedly one of the biggest game release schedules in the history of the industry. Recently, developer LightBox Interactive debuted a new trailer which details the events that will outline the game’s campaign.
The game’s protagonist is Emmett Graves, a hired gun who became infused with rift energy after a rig explosion on his family’s farm. The explosion was the result of an attack by a band of jagged outlaws. Their bodies were partially corrupted in the blast, turning them into mutants known as “the Outcast.”
Emmett’s brother Sydney was able to modify some of his equipment and create a device to suppress Emmett’s Outcast tendencies. Though saved from the ill-fate of transforming into a full mutant, Emmett became cursed with the mark of an Outcast outlaw. The trailer shows Emmett as he travels to White Sands, “a refuge for the rough and the ragged”, where the Outcast have taken over. He has been hired to rid the town of their presence and prevent it from being wiped out entirely.
Starhawk is set to be released sometime next year and though we haven’t been given a whole lot of details, the game will feature gameplay similar to that of its spiritual predecessor, Warhawk. A new system will be introduced called “Build n’ Battle” which will allow players to build structures such as bunkers, wall defenses, and armories during battle. It sounds as though the game will have some RTS elements despite being categorized as a third-person shooter.
Check out the video below. Notice how the cutscene uniquely transitions from a Sin City-style narrative into actual rendered gameplay.
