The recent announcement that Electronic Arts was shuttering Visceral Games came as a shock to many as it was widely known that the developer was working on a single player focused Star Wars title.  If Electronic Arts can’t make take one of the biggest intellectual properties in the world and make a single player game that makes sense for their bottom line, what hope is there for the rest of the publishers out there?

We love single player more than anything, says Rockstar

Well, apparently not all hope has been lost on single player games.  Rockstar Games says that they’re very much still in love with single player experiences and still believe in making these types of games to give players a sense of immersion and like the ability to tell a story.  In a recent interview with GI, Rockstar’s Imran Sarwar revealed this relieving news.

“As a company we love single-player more than anything, and believe in it absolutely — for storytelling and a sense of immersion in the world, multiplayer games don’t rival single-player games,” said Sarwar.

“At Rockstar, we will always have bandwidth issues (in terms of development) because we are perfectionists and to make huge complex games takes a lot of time and resources.  Not everything is always possible, but we still love single-player open-world games more than anything.”

Sarwar goes on to say that games like Grand Theft Auto aren’t possible as a developer if you don’t like expanding on the possibilities of the single player experience.
