HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation makes a slew of changes to Harry’s early years, and it’s going to raise some eyebrows

I'm looking forward to it, though.

HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation is set to hit your screens sooner than we thought. The first episode will premiere on Christmas Day, 2026, which is a fantastic surprise considering earlier estimates pointed to an “early 2027” debut. This news comes hot on the heels of the first trailer, which dropped yesterday, March 25, giving us our initial peek at the highly anticipated reboot.

This new series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for its first season, promises to dive deep into the beloved wizarding world. Each season will dedicate eight episodes to one book, which is a huge win for fans like me who always wished the films had more time to explore every detail.

We’re talking about Harry’s acceptance into Hogwarts, his journey to becoming best mates with Ron and Hermione, and his first epic confrontation with Voldemort. The two-minute trailer even reintroduced us to some iconic faces, including Professor Dumbledore, Professor Snape, Hagrid, and of course, the truly deplorable Dursley family.

If you’re a super fan, you’ve probably already spotted some pretty significant departures and additions from both the books and the original film series

One of the most noticeable changes highlighted in the trailer is a deeper look into Harry’s life at a Muggle school. We see McLaughlin’s Harry struggling and being bullied by his cousin Dudley. While the books briefly mention the cousins attending the same primary school and the Dursleys planning to send Harry to Stonewall High, the first film completely skipped over this, introducing us to Harry just before his eleventh birthday. I think this expanded view of his pre-Hogwarts life is brilliant; it’ll really help us feel the contrast once he finally gets to the wizarding world.

His unhappy home life with the Dursleys also seems to get more screen time. Harry is still relegated to the cupboard under the stairs, but we also get new glimpses into his daily struggles. There’s one particularly chilling clip where Bel Powley’s Petunia is cutting Harry’s hair with kitchen scissors, telling him directly, “You think you’re something special? There is nothing special about you.” It suggests that Petunia, Daniel Rigby’s Vernon, and Amos Kitson’s Dudley might be portrayed less exaggeratedly this time around.

Another fun little detail from the trailer shows Harry and Hagrid taking the underground during their shopping trip to Diagon Alley. The 2001 film didn’t really delve into their travel around London, likely due to time constraints, so seeing them navigate the Muggle public transport system is a neat touch.

Once they get to Hogwarts, we can totally expect all the major moments we love, like the gang’s arrival, the Sorting Hat ceremony, and the thrilling Quidditch matches. However, it looks like we’ll also be getting a much closer look at actual Hogwarts lessons. One scene shows students gathered around a projector, diligently scratching notes onto parchment, while another gives us a quick peek at Professor Sprout’s Herbology class. Of course, Potions classes will be included, with a brief glimpse of Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

With a Christmas Day 2026 premiere, we don’t have too long to wait to see all these changes and additions come to life.
