Howie Mandel wasn’t exactly thrilled with Kelly Ripa after she offered what he felt was a backhanded compliment about his age and looks during his 70th birthday celebration on Live with Kelly and Mark. The studio audience was left in a bit of an awkward silence after Mandel’s brutal honesty.
The interaction kicked off when Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, opened the show by congratulating the America’s Got Talent judge on reaching the big milestone. According to Page Six, what started as a celebratory moment quickly turned awkward after a comment about his age and appearance. It’s always fun when a celebrity hits a big birthday, but things took a sharp turn pretty quickly.
Ripa then dropped the line that started it all, saying, “It doesn’t make any sense.” Mandel, clearly puzzled and not missing a beat, immediately asked her to elaborate: “What do you mean it doesn’t make any sense?” Consuelos, ever the supportive co-host, quickly tried to clarify his wife’s comments by telling the comedian, “It’s because you look great.”
Wait, did she just low-key call him old on TV?
He was probably trying to smooth things over, but Mandel just wasn’t buying it. “That I look great?” Mandel repeated, questioning the sincerity. “That doesn’t mean anything.” He definitely wasn’t letting it go. He went on to explain his dislike for such compliments, calling them a “caveat.” According to Mandel, when you tell someone they’re 70 and then add, “you look great,” you’re essentially saying “you look great for 70.” It’s a subtle but significant difference in meaning, and he was absolutely right to call it out.
At this point, Ripa interjected, trying to assure Mandel that the hosts were “not saying you look great for 70 (years old).” Instead, she clarified, “We’re saying you look great and I don’t believe you’re 70.” However, Mandel still wasn’t having any of it. He doubled down on his point, insisting that the couple was saying exactly that “without saying 70.”
He then delivered a killer analogy that finally got some laughs from the audience. “No, no. It’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person. Oh, you seem smart, you seem smart,’ you see, no, I don’t look good,” he explained. That comparison is spot-on and perfectly illustrates the backhanded nature of those kinds of compliments. Taking a page from those who believe in publicly confronting uncomfortable truths, Mandel refused to let the subtle insult slide, insisting that “looking great for 70” is no compliment at all.
Consuelos, who isn’t shy about flexing his own good looks on the talk show, made one more attempt to salvage the situation, telling Mandel that he does “look good.” Finally, the comedian diffused the tense moment with a bit of humor, teasingly agreeing he’s “gorgeous.” He then revealed his “ridiculous” workout routine that he credits for his appearance, which I’m sure was a welcome change of topic.
“Your friend, (TV show host) Jerry O’Connell, got me into the most ridiculous workout I’ve ever done in my life,” Mandel shared. He then detailed the unique regimen. “I swim but have these cables which I tie onto my ankles and then I attach them to whatever is at the side of the pool.”
He also mentioned, “Then he gave me these frying pan paddles and I swim for an hour and go nowhere,” noting that he gets “so lost in it.”
