Labubu dolls are officially heading to the big screen, with Pop Mart partnering with Sony Pictures to develop a feature film adaptation. As first highlighted by BBC News, the project will be directed by Paul King, known for Paddington and Wonka.
The film is still in early development, but King is also attached as a co-producer and will help develop the script alongside Steven Levenson. The combination of creative talent has already raised expectations for how the project could turn out.
Labubu toys have surged in popularity worldwide, turning Pop Mart into a major force in the collectibles market. The brand’s blind box model, where buyers do not know which figure they will receive until opening it, has helped fuel its growth and appeal.
The film signals a broader push into entertainment
The movie will blend live-action and computer-generated animation, a format that aligns with the design of the Labubu characters. No release date has been announced yet, but the production marks a significant expansion for the brand as it moves beyond retail.
Created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubu originated as part of his illustrated series The Monsters, inspired by Nordic mythology. Lung is set to serve as an executive producer, ensuring continuity with the original creative vision.
The announcement was made in Paris during a global exhibition tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of Labubu toys. The milestone comes as Pop Mart continues to grow rapidly, with investor scrutiny still prominent across industries, including the big tech handouts scrutiny.
Analysts view the film as a natural next step for the company, particularly as younger audiences increasingly engage with brands across both content and commerce. Those broader platform debates also extend into the device surveillance fight.
The move could also help position Pop Mart as a long-term entertainment brand rather than solely a toy company. Experts cited by the BBC said the film could strengthen the company’s long-term value if the content connects with its already committed customer base.
