The security firm involved in the alleged shoving incident with Teyana Taylor at the Oscars has described the interaction as “incidental contact,” which is a very different take from what Taylor herself called being “shoved” by security. This statement from Security Industry Specialists came after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it was deeply concerned about the alleged incident involving the One Battle After Another star.
According to NBC News, video circulating online shows an upset Taylor after the alleged interaction, telling a man that he was “rude” for “putting your hands on a female.” She then told someone else she felt “literally shoved.” “Everybody is having a good time, but when you shove me, that’s a different story,” Taylor explained to a woman nearby in the clip.
The Academy quickly offered its support to Taylor, stating it was “extremely upset to learn about the experience endured by Teyana Taylor at the end of the Oscars ceremony last night.” They identified the person involved as a member of an outside security team hired for the event, and made it clear that this kind of behavior is “unacceptable.” The Academy also thanked Taylor for her “remarkable grace” during the incident.
The security firm and the Academy gave very different accounts of what happened to Teyana Taylor
Taylor shared her thanks on X, writing, “I really appreciate your unwavering love & support,” after the Academy’s response. It was a night full of memorable moments, including an Oscars tie that hadn’t happened in over a decade.
Security Industry Specialists acknowledged a “brief” incident between one of their team members and Taylor, but described it as “incidental contact.” The firm stated, “we regret that the situation escalated,” and added that it does not meet their expected “standard of professionalism.” They also said they have addressed the matter internally to prevent similar situations in the future.
Before the firm’s statement came out, Taylor said that security “was just doing a lot,” but clarified that she was fine and happy overall. She said, “I think the first thing people do is definitely, you know, make assumptions. But at the end of the day I just don’t tolerate disrespect. Especially when it’s unwarranted and unprovoked.”
This incident happened on an important night for Taylor. She was nominated for the best supporting actress award, though she lost to Weapons star Amy Madigan. Despite that, she still got to take the stage later in the evening when One Battle After Another won the Oscar for best picture. The ceremony also saw Ryan Coogler take home his first Oscar win after years of dreaming of a different career entirely.
