How to Use Keywords in Your Posts

Keywords are the foundation for success on our site, or on any site on the internet.  Choosing the correct keywords and then implementing them in your posts is one of the most important things you can do in structuring your post.  While many writers have a firm grasp on the English language, seo and keywords fly right over their heads.

This article is going to be short and sweet when it comes using keywords in your posts and it’s going to be a prime example of what to do when writing your articles.  We’re going to do a quick analysis of a keyword phrase as well as trends to write a new post.

Things to remember here are that once you have selected keywords you want to include them in your title, in your post body, and potentially in headings.  It’s also important to note that you will want to differentiate those keywords and not just repeat it over and over again in the same context across your post.

Say your keyword is Pokemon.  You would at a minimum want your keyword to be in the title of your post (first word preferably), in the first paragraph (first sentence preferably), and then used at least one other time in the article and that depends on how long or short the article is regarding if you should use it again.  I would say 5 times in a 300 word article is pushing up on the limits of how many times you should use it, but you could use it more often in something like a review.

Regardless, you’ll also want to see what people are searching for when it comes to your keyword.  You can use this Google Keyword Suggestion Tool to find out.

So these are pretty broad keywords and might not have anything to do with what you are writing about so maybe we should narrow it down.  Depending on what you’re writing, you might want to type a string of words.

Finding the correct keywords doesn’t always equal success, you still need to make sure that people are actually searching for a specific topic.  The tool linked above will give you a good approximation, but Google’s search bar auto-suggest gets updated more quickly.  Simply use the Chrome browser and begin typing in keyword strings to see which things are popular now.

Using keywords in your posts is about research and execution.  First you’ll need to find keywords for your articles, and second you’ll need to implement them in the title and body of your article.

It’s understandable that if you don’t have much experience doing this it will feel unnatural to write this way.  There are many different types of articles you will write, some will be very heavily targeted at specific keywords while others may be more general.  The important thing to make sure you always keep in mind is that you writing your content for a human to understand.  You should never sacrifice readability or information clarity for the sake of keywords.

Once you have mastered the art of merging reader experience with keywords, you’re really on your way to great content.
