Advance Wars, a turn-based strategy RPG series that started way back on the Game Boy Advance handheld, has been out of commission for quite some time, despite the series having a very dedicated fanbase in the west. For many, it was seen as the modern equivalent to Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series, which instead features medieval fantasy instead of modern warfare, and while Fire Emblem has received plenty of attention and new releases worldwide, Advance Wars hasn’t been seen in action since 2008, with the release of “Advance Wars: Days of Ruin” on the Nintendo DS, which received plenty of praise for it’s balanced multiplayer, but criticized for having a less charming cartoon atmosphere compared to the originals.
Fans of the series then got blasted back at E3 2021, with an announcement that their beloved series would be making a huge comeback. Nintendo and WayForward revealed a remake of Advance Wars 1 and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising on the Nintendo Switch, with re-imaged visuals, updated gameplay and more, all set to be released on December 3rd, 2021 Unfortunately, it seems that Nintendo and WayForward could use some more time before releasing the game, as they have changed their release window from December of 2021 to Spring of 2022.
The announcement came straight from Nintendo’s official Twitter page, stating that: “The game just needs a little more time for fine-tuning. You’ll be battling with Andy & friends soon! Thanks for your patience.” No further details regarding the game’s delay have been stated.
From the outset, the most obvious reason for the delay is that the game’s current state doesn’t seem to be up to Nintendo or WayForward’s standards, so a delay into 2022 could be very good for the game overall. Another reason could be that the game has a lot of competition to compete with during the holiday season that could impact its sales, such as Halo Infinite. While games of different audiences and genres aren’t always competing directly with each other, the gaming scene continues to grow with titles that are trying to fight for everyone’s time and attention, so it’s always best to prepare releases to have the highest chance of gaining attention and success.
We will see if the delay will pay off for Nintendo and WayForward as Spring 2022 approaches. For more information on Advance Wars 1 + 2: Reboot Camp, visit our news pieces here at Attack of the Fanboy.
