Six Democratic lawmakers now have security guards watching them around the clock after President Donald Trump said they committed treason and should be put to death. The trouble started when these lawmakers made a video telling soldiers they don’t have to follow orders that break the law.
According to Daily Mail, the six politicians getting protection are Senators Elissa Slotkin from Michigan and Mark Kelly from Arizona. The other four are House members Jason Crow from Colorado, Maggie Goodlander from New Hampshire, Chrissy Houlahan from Pennsylvania, and Chris DeLuzio from Pennsylvania. They all served in the military or worked in national security before.
Slotkin used to work for the CIA. She said hundreds of angry messages came her way after Trump spoke out against them. “Capitol Police came to us and said, ‘We’re gonna put you on 24/7 security.’ We’ve got law enforcement out in front of my house. I mean, it changes things immediately,” she revealed.
What Trump said and why it matters
Trump wrote angry posts on Truth Social last Thursday. He called what the lawmakers did seditious behavior and said it deserves the death penalty. He kept posting that they should be arrested. Trump even shared messages from other people, including one saying hang them George Washington would.
Hakeem Jeffries leads the Democrats in the House. He spoke out strongly against what Trump said and confirmed his team was talking to police about keeping the lawmakers safe. We completely reject Donald Trump’s disgusting and dangerous death threats, Jeffries told reporters.
His office has been working with security officials to protect these members of Congress and their families. This is not the first time the Trump administration has taken action against those who reference politically sensitive topics, as two federal prosecutors were recently removed from their positions after mentioning January 6 in a sentencing memo.
Kelly spent 25 years as a Navy pilot and also flew as an astronaut. When responding to Trump’s threats, he talked about his time in the service. “I’ve had a missile blow up next to my airplane, been shot at dozens of times by anti-aircraft fire, and launched into orbit — all for my country,” Kelly said. “I never thought I’d see a President call for my execution. Trump doesn’t understand the Constitution, and we’re all less safe for it.”
Kelly’s wife Gabrielle Giffords used to serve in Congress and barely survived when someone tried to assassinate her back in 2012. Jeffries himself has faced threats in the past, with Speaker Mike Johnson’s response to those threats drawing criticism.
The six lawmakers put out a statement together saying they stand by their video. They wrote that they are veterans who promised to protect the Constitution. No threats or calls for violence will stop them from keeping that promise. They said all Americans need to come together and speak out against the president calling for their murder.
They said nobody has to follow orders that go against the law or the Constitution. Karoline Leavitt speaks for the White House, and she kept saying the lawmakers were telling soldiers to ignore lawful orders. But reporters at the briefing pushed back and said that’s not what the video actually shows.
