Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin now has Capitol Police watching over her all day and night after President Donald Trump made serious accusations against her on social media. The extra security started right after Trump posted messages on Truth Social going after Slotkin and five other Democratic lawmakers.
According to Newsweek, the security boost happened because these Democrats, who all used to serve in the military or worked in intelligence, put out a video on Tuesday. They told people currently serving in the military and intelligence agencies that they can and should refuse orders that break the law. Trump did not like this and responded with harsh words.
Trump posted that the lawmakers should be arrested and that what they did was “punishable by death.” He also wrote “This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country” and called them traitors. His words worried many people about whether these lawmakers would be safe.
This situation shows how heated things have gotten in Washington
Slotkin used to work as a CIA analyst and spent time in Iraq three different times. She talked to reporter Chris Hayes about what happened after Trump’s posts went up. She said “It was instantaneous. I mean hundreds, if not thousands, of calls, emails, texts and online postings.” The Capitol Police told her right away “We’re gonna put you on 24/7 security.”
She said police are now staying at her house to protect her. Slotkin explained that when the president says someone should be killed, regular people will see that and start making their own threats that can be even worse.
Before getting into politics, she worked in important defense jobs under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. She won a seat in the House of Representatives in 2018 and then moved to the Senate in 2024.
The group of Democrats put out a statement together after Trump went after them. They wrote “We are veterans and national security professionals who love this country and swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation.” This latest clash adds to growing tensions among Senate Democrats about the best way to deal with the Trump administration.
Democratic leaders in the House spoke out against what Trump said. They called his death threats against members of Congress disgusting and dangerous, and said violence has no place in American politics.
On the other side, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the Democrats’ video was “wildly inappropriate.” When reporters asked White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt directly if Trump wanted these Congress members executed, she said no. The whole situation has started conversations within the Democratic Party about how members should respond to escalating political threats.
