Destiny is on its way to becoming Activision’s next billion dollar franchise, with the company recently announcing that the game sold more $500 million in day one sales. Â In a press release statement from Activision, CEO Bobby Kotick addresses the early milestone for Destiny.
“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million. Â This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. Â The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”
“Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry’s history. Â It’s also the highest selling day one digital console release in history. Â We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation,” adds Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.
There’s no doubt that Destiny has sold well thus far, but just how well the game has been received is still anyone’s guess. Â Metacritic has yet to publish a single professional review for Bungie’s shooter, but user scores for the game have been a mixed bag, users polarized by the game either rating it a 10 out of 10 or a 0 out of 10.
