Bandai Namco has finally revealed the first plot details of the mysterious Vol. 4 of .hack//G.U. Last Recode, the HD compilation of the original trilogy for PS2. Up until now, the Vol. 3//Redemption was the end of the story, but developer CyberConnect 2 has decided to create a brand new chapter to launch it alongside the original entries.

In this new episode, series protagonist Haseo receives an email informing him of the location of Ovan, who disappeared at the end of the third volume. After more than a year without login into The World R:2, Haseo needs to find his friend before the service is terminated at the end of the year. Turns out Ovan is located in a new area called Great Cavity Qua Holm, asleep inside a huge block of ice.

Vol. 4 will add some new gameplay additions, like the 5th Form of Haseo, and a new character called Kusabila, a girl who seems to know a lot about the mysteries of Qua Holm. Haseo’s old comrades will also join him in this fourth adventure. Will this be the last time we see of them? It’s not clear, as Bandai Namco seems to have plans to retake the franchise with new games. Perhaps Vol. 4 will act as a bridge with the new entries, or it’s just a way to give the series a grand finale.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode will launch for PlayStation 4 and PC on November 1 in Japan, and this fall for Western territories.
