After much hype from The Coalition team, the new Gears of War 4 trailer debuted during Fear the Walking Dead Sunday night. The Xbox One exclusive is hits this October, but first we get a poignant flashback in the style we’ve come to expect from the third-person shooter.

“25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy,” the description of the trailer explains on YouTube.

The previous Gears of War 4 teaser of JD Fenix running through the woods while being chased by Swarm held true. The twist is JD flashing back to when he was a child, watching his father Marcus Fenix plant a tree at a humble homestead. Things get more twisty when Anya makes an appearance to confirm she is the younger Fenix’s mother. The ultimate twist comes from seeing Marcus carve JD’s initials into the tree and then what is seen at the end.

The reveal that Anya is JD’s mother, confirmed by Coalition Director of Community Adam Fletcher, is interesting. The lore of the franchise stated she was unable to have children. This led to speculation among fans that she had either died or that she and Marcus ultimately did stay together after Gears of War 3.

The first trailer of every Gears of War title has always included a cover of a song. This entry in the series gets heavy metal band Disturbed covering Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” It’s not quite as impactful as the “Mad World” trailer of the first game in the franchise, but then none of the other entries have been either.

This all of course leads into the Gears of War 4 beta, which is launching April 18 for those that played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition prior to April 11. You don’t have to have purchased the game, just played it with your gamertag. The beta will then open up to all Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers on April 25 and run through May 1.
