The Coalition and Microsoft announced the release date for Gears of War 4 Wednesday. The still Xbox One exclusive third-person shooter is targeting an October 11, 2016 release.
Gears of War 4 marks the beginning of an epic new saga for one of gaming’s most celebrated franchises, as a new band of heroes rises to confront a fearsome new threat. Harkening back to the dark and intense roots of the original classic, fans can expect a familiar, yet distinct evolution of gameplay, including brutal and intimate action, a heart-pounding campaign, genre-defining multiplayer and stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 4.
The announcement did not note any platform for Gears of War 4 beyond mentioning the beta is coming to the Xbox One on April 18. However, an EW article covering the release date reveal does mention the console. Xbox Head Phil Spencer recently made comments about making more games available to the Xbox One and Windows 10 PC that makes sense. Gears would fall under that category since the Ultimate Edition is already available for Windows 10, though with some lingering issues.
The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta is set to launch April 18 for those that played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition prior to April 11. You don’t have to have purchased the game, just played it with your gamertag. The beta will then open up to all Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers on April 25 and run through May 1.
The Coalition will also host a panel at the PAX East convention in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, April 24. The Out of the Shadows: Inside Gears of War Multiplayer with The Coalition will take a look at the game’s multiplayer and provide “some special surprises.” The Gears of War 4 multiplayer will also be playable on the show floor in the Xbox booth.
The full cover for Gears of War 4 also debuted in the Entertainment Weekly article.
