April 2018 was another big month for Sony and the PlayStation 4. In a month that saw the release of the critically acclaimed God of War, Sony topped the software and hardware charts in April. Alongside the critical success, God of War became the game with highest ever launch month dollar sales for any game that has ever launched on a PlayStation system.
Putting that together with other PlayStation software and Sony’s April 2018 was the highest ever for the month in any year since 1995 in terms of software dollar sales.
It wasn’t just God of War that topped the charts in April. Another PlayStation exclusive made it to the top three with MLB 18: The Show at #3.
Over the course of this generation, Sony has continued to press forward. Racking up month after month of being the best-selling hardware, the PlayStation 4 is handily beating the Xbox One and is remains the best-selling console in 2018. Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro also saw a boost in the month as the God of War bundle was the top-selling hardware item in terms of overall dollar sales.
This strong month by Sony pushed hardware, software, and accessories sales up across the board.

Sony appears ready to lead this generation from wire to wire and it looks like there’s little that Nintendo or Microsoft can do about it. While Nintendo has had their fair share of hits in the last year, Microsoft has not seen the same success. Sea of Thieves was their last exclusive game and it didn’t take long for critics and fans to turn on the game following release. May might not be kind to the console either. State of Decay 2 did not receive a great reception from critics earlier this month.
E3 2018 is just around the corner though. If there’s a spot where Microsoft can circle the wagons and deliver something to get people excited about the Xbox brand, this is the place to do it.
