That was fast. It hasn’t even been a week since Bandai Namco trademarked .hack//G.U. Last Recode in Europe, and now not only has the collection been trademarked in the West, it has a release date too: late 2017.
As mentioned in an earlier article, .hack//G.U. Last Recode is Bandai Namco’s latest “addition” to the .hack series as part of the franchise’s 15th anniversary. Last Recode will be a collection of three games from the G.U. sub-series: .hack//G.U. Vol. 1//Rebirth (2006), hack//G.U. Vol. 2//Reminisce (2007), and hack//G.U. Vol. 3//Redemption (2007). Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 are going the extra mile with this collection, opting to not only remaster the original three games, but enhancing them as well, as it will feature an abundance of gameplay and mechanical changes that will set them apart from the original iterations.
Bandai Namco stated in the original announcement that .hack//G.U. Last Recode is part of a larger effort to reboot the series. Rather than make another new game, however, it decided to remaster and enhance some older ones, so players of all types can jump onboard and see what Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 have planned for the series should it get a legitimate new entry. It’s worth mentioning that while Bandai Namco has suggested there will be other projects related to .hack going forward, it has yet to mention what those are.
With this announcement, .hack//G.U. Last Recode is now confirmed in Japan, U.S. and Europe for the PlayStation 4 and PC. There is still no mention of when the Japanese version will release (presumably before the other versions do), but the U.S. and European versions are confirmed to arrive in late 2017.
