‘He’s Not Stupid’: Bernie Sanders Admits Trump Understood Something Democrats Missed, Even As He’s Busy Making It Worse

When Bernie Sanders is complimenting Trump's instincts, you know something's off.

Senator Bernie Sanders said something unexpected about President Donald Trump during his time on The Daily Show on Monday. Sanders did not really praise Trump, but he said the president understood America’s problems better than the Democratic Party does.

As per Fox News, Sanders told host Jon Stewart that Trump saw something important about what is happening in the country. Stewart joked that the senator’s words sounded passive-aggressive, but Sanders kept going to explain his point about what Trump figured out that others did not.

“He may be crazy, he may be a pathological liar, but he’s not stupid,” Sanders said. The Vermont senator explained that Trump was right when he said the system is broken, even though Trump is now making things worse. Sanders said Democrats need to accept this. “The truth is, the system is broken. [Trump] is making it worse,” the senator said. “But the Democrats have to acknowledge that this system is broken.”

Stewart Asks Democrats To Look At The Truth

During the talk, Stewart said nice things about Sanders for saying the same things for many years. He then said something bold, calling Trump “the most socialist president” of his lifetime. Stewart said that “the true inheritor of the Sanders revolution is Trump.”

The host gave clear examples to back up what he was saying. “Taking a percentage of companies to do business, that’s a Bernie Sanders idea. Doing a Trump Rx where the government is involved in selling pharmaceuticals, that’s a Bernie Sanders idea,” Stewart said.

Trump talked about a big deal with Intel in August. The deal gave the government part ownership in the tech company after putting in $8.9 billion to grow the domestic semiconductor industry. Trump has been making big policy choices that have shocked both people who support him and people who do not.

Stewart asked Sanders if he felt upset that Trump took ideas Sanders worked on his whole career while Democrats stayed away from them. “Yeah, that’s true,” Sanders said.

The senator then pushed the Democratic Party to face the “bloody reality” of different broken systems in America. He talked about the health care system as one thing that needs to be fixed.

Sanders named several areas where he thinks the government needs to get better. Democrats have faced harsh words from Trump on many policy topics, but Sanders said his party needs to be clear about these problems. “We need the Democratic Party to be very clear. The campaign system [and] current campaign finance system is broken. You got to get rid of Citizens United. You got to move to public funding of elections, give everybody a chance to participate in our democracy,” Sanders said.
