Hurricane Melissa turns peaceful yoga retreat into a chilling nightmare as trapped influencers prioritize TikTok content over survival

They didn't plan for this!

A group of influencers went to Jamaica for a yoga retreat but ended up trapped when Hurricane Melissa hit the island on October 28, 2025. The massive Category 5 storm forced them to hide in a wine cellar under their Montego Bay villa instead of relaxing on the beach like they had planned.

According to Daily Dot, the group from Florida got to Montego Bay a few days before the hurricane arrived. When they realized how bad things were getting, they tried to book flights home, but the airport had already shut down. They had no choice but to stay.

What got people talking online was how the influencers handled the whole thing. Instead of just focusing on staying safe, they kept posting videos on TikTok about what was happening. Many people watching felt like the group was more interested in making content than actually dealing with the danger they were in.

When disaster struck, the group kept their phones rolling

One person in the group, Nicole Doyon, started posting videos on October 25 asking people online what they should do about leaving. She kept sharing clips that showed the resort and the group buying supplies. Another person named Carlye Guido also posted videos of them getting ready for the storm.

The posts did not stop even when the hurricane got closer. Nicole put up dozens of videos, including one that jokingly showed what everyone was wearing during the hurricane. But the reality was not funny at all since nobody knows yet how many people got hurt or died from the storm. The situation was similar to another recent resort disaster where guests watched helplessly as flooding overtook a luxury property.

A third member of the group, Sydney, also shared updates saying they were trying to keep calm before everything got worse. When people criticized them online, she told viewers they were only seeing a small part of what was really going on and that acting happy on camera did not mean they were not scared.

The videos showed how the group moved down into the wine cellar where they set up beds and even made a temporary bathroom. The power went out for most of the country, and they were part of that blackout. Their bathroom setup brought attention to ongoing concerns about hotel and resort privacy standards.

Nicole’s final post on TikTok before the storm fully hit said they were using a generator and that their phone service kept cutting in and out as the wind got stronger. Her latest video shows everyone looking okay after the hurricane passed. The group is now helping clean up the area now that it is safe to go back outside.
