Joseph Traylor will serve 20 years in prison for the death of his 15-month-old son, Terry Traylor, following a motorcycle crash in Princeton, Kentucky. The father received this sentence on Friday after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence and reckless driving, according to Law&Crime. This outcome follows a plea deal reached in July, which saw original murder charges reduced to the current convictions.
The incident occurred in July 2024, at approximately 6:45 PM. According to police reports, Joseph Traylor was operating his motorcycle in the 300 block of Beverly Lane while his toddler son was strapped to his chest. Police said the investigation determined that Traylor was driving the wrong way on a one-way street. The situation turned fatal when he attempted to perform a wheelie, according to the department.
He lost control of the bike and slammed directly into a telephone pole. No other vehicle was involved, and police listed Traylor as 47 at the time. Emergency responders arrived on the scene and transported both the father and the child to a local hospital, where the toddler was pronounced dead. Police did not arrest Joseph Traylor that night, as he was airlifted to a medical facility in Nashville, Tennessee.
Traylor was facing a murder charge before the plea deal
Officers arrested him on a warrant 10 days after the crash, following his release from the hospital. That warrant charged Joseph Traylor with murder and reckless driving, and police thanked the public for help in locating him. A Caldwell County grand jury later indicted him on murder, reckless driving, and DUI. However, the murder count was amended in July, as prosecutors agreed to a charge of vehicular homicide while under the influence of drugs or substances.
The 20-year term was expected, as prosecutors had recommended it when Joseph Traylor entered the plea at a pretrial conference in Caldwell Circuit Court. Circuit Judge Jamus Redd addressed the courtroom during the sentencing and described the case as a tragedy. He said he hoped the prison term would provide the family with some form of closure. Prosecutors also noted the impact this event has had on the family members left behind.
The obituary for young Terry Traylor stated that his “infectious smile was a blessing to all who knew him.” It added that his family will remember the toddler. The accident occurred in Princeton, about 170 miles southwest of Louisville. Joseph Traylor has been held in the Caldwell County Jail since his arrest in 2024. He is now expected to be transferred to state custody to begin serving the 20-year sentence.
