A new job listing posted by Blizzard on its official website is asking for a developer for an “unannounced Diablo project,” which can only mean one thing: there might be something new coming to the Diablo universe in the future.
The reason why this is a “might,” rather than an absolute, is because Blizzard occasionally lists jobs for this franchise, such as in 2016 when it was looking for a new game director for the franchise to “lead the Diablo series into the future,” or in 2015 when it listed an opening for an art director for a similar unannounced Diablo project, but nothing ever came of them (yet). This listing could very well be the same, but with Blizzard being a bit more specific — it needs a dungeon artist “to build atmospheric dungeons — the company could be ready to seriously get the ball rolling.
Assuming that it is real, then one has to wonder what exactly this project actually is. It doesn’t sound like a mobile game, meaning the only remaining options would be a spinoff, expansion or sequel. There isn’t much that can be said about a spinoff or sequel (Diablo 3‘s main story does seem like it has run its course), but an expansion would definitely be interesting to see. Blizzard somehow managed to make Necromancers good in 2017’s Rise of the Necromancer expansion, so it would be nice to see something similar happen to Assassins or Druids.
Regardless of what it is and assuming it is real, it’s unlikely Blizzard will unveil it any time soon.
