Mario is no stranger to sports games, as his face has been associated with everything from the Olympics to go-kart racing. Along the way there have been a few hits, and a few misses, but the Mario Tennis series has usually been more hit than miss. Now a new game is set to come out in the series, with Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. Nintendo has just revealed a release date of November 20th, putting it squarely in the otherwise desolate Wii U holiday season.

Launching for a discounted price of $49.99, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash brings the classic Mario Tennis formula to the Wii U. “Compete with friends in the multiplayer Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash game on the Wii U system. Along with the fun and dynamic gameplay known to the franchise, surprise your opponents with a new move to the series, the Jumpshot, which sends the ball flying down the court.

“Change the sport up with new Mega Battles, using the Mega Mushroom to gain an advantage over the competition. Claim your spot in Mario Tennis lore in singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2) as you play with and against family, friends or the CPU using returning and new characters to the series.”

The Wii U is in desperate need of some hit games, having seen its two major 2015 titles pushed into next year with The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox Zero. With just Xenoblade Chronicles X and Devil’s Third to keep it company, can Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash keep Nintendo fans happy through the winter months? Let us know what you think in the comments.
